Popping in steering rack??

Hey guys / gals,

I posted a while ago about a popping noise coming from my front end whenever I made a turn. I replaced the ball joints and such and it was still there. I got a friend to poke around under it while I moved the steering wheel. It appears the popping noise it coming directly from the steering rack assembly. Also, it happens even if I am not moving. But it only happens when I turn the wheel ALL the way left, then it pops. Then it will pop if I go all the way right. It will not pop if I just go all the way left, back off a bit, and go left again.

Can anyone help me figure this out? I'm REALLY hoping I don't have to replace my steering rack!

I have a 99 323 e46, I too have a similar problem.. but worse. Whenever I turn the wheel to either side while standing or moving very slowly, it creeeeeeeeeeeeeks. Sounds like the steering is made up of wood or something. I don't know if this sound is similar to your popping... but I have a bad feeling that I have to replace my rack. I would love for someone who had similar problem post something..... anything would be nice..... solution would be better.

Is it possible the outer tierod is popping and the noise is transfering to the steering rack? feel the suspension components while your buddy is turning the steering wheel to pinpoint the vibration. Are the two steering rack bolts tight? Ive also seen excessive play in the steering column causing a popping noise which sounds like it's coming from the steering rack.

Lazerin have you checked your power steering fluid, when low it lets in air and makes that sort of noise.
