What is your definition of an air brake?

two different animals dude.

Air Brakes are usually used in big trucks like Semi's, Deuce 'n halfs, and five tons (for you militar folks). They work with air pressure. Big cylinders hold air and the air makes the brakes work. You usually have to run the engine for a while and let air build up in the cylinder before you can move. Normally they don't have ABS (though newer 5 Tons in the Army have ABS now)

ABS is just anti lock brakes (the acronym actually comes from German..that's why it's not ALB) Keeps your brakes from locking up and so to say "automatically" pumps them. Causes a pulsation feeling when braking in snow with ABS.

Then there is the other ABS....acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (sp) which is the stuff Lego's are made out of.

Yeah, airbrakes are for the big trucks, and its not actaully the air that's powering the brake pads. What it is, is that there are really strong springs trying to brake the truck, but the air piston holds them back. That's why you hear big trucks spurt air from their brakes whenever they go from , say, a red light. The spurt you hear is actaully the cylinders activating, pulling the brake pads away from the discs. iirc, of course ;)

ABS can also be Anit-lock Braking System.

And air brakes use the air to force the brakes to work. At least on some applications.

My grandpa used to be a trucker. When he first started, he was near Marathon, it was really hilly and really foggy (if you know Marathon, you know what I'm talking about!!). He was going down a hill, and started pumping his brakes. He then ran out of air pressure, and the brakes didnt work. He couldnt gear down, and he began to pick up speed. He woke up his wife, and told her to jump! (she didnt, thank goodness). Anyway, he put it in neutral, and revved the engine. This built the air pressure back up, and he stopped the truck.
