I would have loved to state "I'm building the Tamiya Porsche 935/78" but it has been long out of production and I can't find an affordable copy.

So I figured, let's try to design my own 3D model of this car, so I can print and build it.

https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/66/dc/66dc0e124609bac92c7914be3232910b.png

My design skills are far from expert, so I'm learning as I go, but I'm liking it. So after a couple of hours, the shape starts to come out.

https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/0c/ec/0cec2b13cbdbcd3d2a42a91523e62775.png

And by now I can start to concentrate more on the distinct lines of this Porsche. The characteristic intake on top of the nose, intake for the intercoolers in the rear fenders and so on.

All in all... I'm continuing to make progress and the car starts to look more and more on the original. Fingers crossed I can pull this off

Working the front bumper today and I'm happy with the overal shape. As it appears now, only the front lip needs to be created.

Obviously I had to 'clean up' some small defects in the mesh, but that will be a continuing story designing in 3D.
All in all,,, very happy with the progress.

The changes become smaller and smaller as I move more into the details. This time the rubbers around the front windshield were created.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/0f/f8/0ff8dd16d53c87be6bd1382f934f6f4b.png
I've also isolated the aero parts of the doors. This allows for easier printing and painting. The same will happen for the big wing. Eventually, I might end up separating more body panels, but first get this model out in its basic shape.

This weekend I've been working on some of the panel lines. The line for the door and front truck have been don.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/5c/4e/5c4e46367bd7110d63e72707113232fb.png
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/2c/36/2c369d006935ef1880e5cab86e933d31.png

This car really doesn't have all that many panel lines, since all body parts were made of fiber glass in real big chunks. They just had to be light weight as the tubular frame kept the rigidity.
So maybe one or two panel lines left on the rear end, other than that, I think that is done. About time to get working on the big rear wing.

I've worked on the rear wing. It consists of multiple parts that allow for easy printing and potentially for adding more details when building the model.

Looks great so far. I have the 1:24 Tamiya Kit, however the interior needs some addidional or scratch work, to look good

I guess you are not offering if for selling ;)

Anyways, I've come so far now, I'm going to finish this anyway.

This morning I spend some time working on the air vents on the wheel wells

Work on the front is done, but the rears still need to be solidified, so they become printable.

Just a small update this time. I managed to create the grill in the engine cover. I had to do that twice, as my first design was incorrect.

In order to be able to print the body, the model has to be made solid. From the pictures below, you can spot some red areas, those are all 'insides' that I need to give an external side as well.

https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/8c/d8/8cd877fce989a6fdcec2061e1df36cb3.png

And because those colors were making me dizzy... I sculpted the mirrors.

With the entire model solidified, it's time to do a grand review
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/27/42/2742cfe2933bdf83234ff2655444058c.png
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/b2/c5/b2c5f910c79f462ffe1915fa7b240819.png

And that is where I spotted an importen part missing. The side panels at the rear continued on the bottom as well. Forming sort of a diffusor. So I quickly molded those in as well.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/9b/d2/9bd275bc04ea9f2bfd09767fb3dfa6c5.png

And although some minor bits are still missing (I had to leave them out for now, because the are asymetrical; like the petrol filler caps and 1 air intake), it was time to run a test print.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/e9/11/e911cc077b0f37937d95313a48855f36.png

I'm quite sure I've missed something that needs a bit more tweaking, but that is okay. Although I do hope I'm very very close to getting this right. :D

The results of my test print from yesterday might seem a bit shocking, as the body broke in a few area's. This was mostly because I had put WAY to many support on it.

https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/f0/6f/f06fb1092a99ffb5bee033b661dc441a.jpg
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/30/db/30dbad5102109486cde859de439558db.jpg

But the breaking points also do provide me with a hint that they might need some reinforcement. As do the sides of the body, as the walls are a bit too thin.
I think that with an additional hour or 2 these issues can all be fixed and I can start adding in the asymmetrical details. When that is done, print number 2 will follow.

Lovely job on Blender with a great result!!! What wallthickness did you set for the model and what printer do you use?

Deathtrap
05-20-2023, 01:43 AM
Thanks. The wall thickness is a bit eye-balled to be honest. I did use a Solidify modifier, but that just didn't work to my liking. But I did some measurements afterwards and the thickness in most places is about 1.2mm. The window frames and louvres are thinner to keep their good looks.

But the last print didn't come out that well. :(

https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/40/ae/40ae55e5cc21c5b357b175c8c5eccc07.jpg

It looks okay from a distance, but upon close inspection I noticed a bit of a disrupted look.

https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/ba/78/ba78e6033d5e14464b12dea8ebc3622d.jpg
The front part had broken loose of the build plate and I expect it had began to wobble during printing, resulting in the misprint.

Positively, my altered and added details came out very nice and even the wheel base is spot on, compared to a regular 911 frame (from Fujimi).

Hi Deathtrap, looking great so far! Shame about the distortion in the print but when you know the problem you can fix it. I hope your next print will come out nicely! I also started a blender model couple of days ago, I am learning how to use it. Do you think I have too many construction lines? I tried to reduce them to the minimum though. I still need to finish the front and the side window area and add all the creases around the wheelarches. How did you make the windows, constructed the edges or with boolean? Thanks

Hello all!

I find the 935/78 very successful and would like to ask how you do the creation of the models. Are there any good tutorials? I would like to create the 835/78 in the original version with the closed door panels and the flat rear spoiler. Thanks already for the help!

Hi Corrado,

Nice little project you have going there.
Unfortunately I still have found a way to fully resolve the issue. I think it is because of a few bits adding up to each other:
- My FEP needs replacement
- Thickening the walls of the model will make it more sturdy
- Splitting the model in 2 will also make it easier to print

I think your design looks a lot cleaner than mine. I did try to keep everything to a minimum, but I did not manage as well as you did.
The windows and wheel arches I created using designed edges. So no booleans. For the holes like the 3 in the bonnet, I used a ShrinkWrap modifier and then apply and resolve that on the main model.
Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ci1jBOm_5NY&t=197s

As far as I have learned so far, there are 2 ways to make you model solid. Either use the Solidify modifier, or 'by hand'. I used the modifier first, but didn't like the compromises I had to do in the problem areas. So I went with the manual option on designing the inside of the body shell.

Are there any good tutorials?
Hi ZakSpeed, I don't know your skill level on Blender. I've learned it myself in evening hours and I'm not a professional. If you are new/a beginner, I must recommend to get to the basics. I used this tutorial from BlenderGuru to get me started. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyJWoyVx_XI&list=PLjEaoINr3zgEq0u2MzVgAaHEBt--xLB6U&pp=iAQB

This design is by far not my first one. I have created a couple far simpler things first, like rims and brake disks. For this project, I used yet another Youtube tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGPvxIrobFE&t=1041s

I hope this was all helpful.

Hi Deathtrap,

Even with the problems you're finding with distortion, panel thickness, etc (all of which I'm sure can be overcome), it's impressive to see the overall quality of these 3D prints now. It's scratch-building in a new way!

Enjoying your progress, and looking forward to seeing what you do with the interior.

Good luck!
