2012 Fusion randomly shutting off when stopping

Good afternoon. My daughter has a 2012 Fusion with the 3.0L. Starting two months ago, the engine will randomly shut off when coming to a stop. Put it in park, crank it up and it goes like nothing happened. No warning, no lights, no shuddering, no codes. It might do it a couple times a week and then nothing the next week. Our mechanic and the local dealership can find nothing wrong with it and can't reproduce the issue. Is anyone familiar with this?

Does it shut off like the ignition is cut off, or stumble and run weakly, then stop? How many miles? How old are the spark plugs? Air filter?

Been out all weekend. So, it shuts down like the ignition has been cut. It has 70k miles and has the original spark plugs. I've been told to clean the MAF sensor so I bought a new filter and cleaner for the sensor. The air cleaner probably hasn't been changed in a year.

Okay, last night I changed the air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor. Both were spotless before I got started. Changed and cleaned them anyway.

Does it randomly cut out for a second or less while driving? My 2010 Fusion SEL 3.0 started this behavior, along with the occasional stall at any stop. An irregular occurence no rhyme or reason. After about 3 or so months, finally got a check engine light, code for the crankshaft sensor. Got one at the local Ford dealer, about 50 bucks. Installed it, car runs like new which it always had before this issue. Never would have suspected this part. Sensor is located above rear of oil pan. Not saying this is your issue but tracing down intermittents is damn near impossible.

It does it after the car is warmed up. I ended up replacing the MAF sensor and it ran fine for a week. Today she called me and the wrench light is now on and it's running rough if at all. She limped it home and I'm waiting to check it when I get home. Starting to think throttle body.

Yeah maybe could be the throttle body. I'm on my third one. 1st one dealer replaced at 65k under that customer satisfaction deal they offered, one time thing. That one, supposed to have been an upgraded version, lasted only 17k miles. I put another on, been good since. When my 1st two throttle bodies starting acting up the wrench light would come on, restricting performance basically limp mode. Turn key off, restart and fine for a while. Don't replace anything unless wrench or check engine lights point to something. When parts get far enough out of specs the light will come on. Sometimes we have to deal with the quirks until we definitely know. However, stalling in traffic or going into limp mode on the interstate is definitely not good. Good luck

If the " wrench" shows on the dash there would be a pending code, that might point you to the issue.

I have a scanner being delivered today so we'll see what that shows.

So, the code I got is P2111: Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Open.

I would probably go ahead and replace the throttle body. I also replaced the green gasket, around 8 bucks that's your choice. I've seen a simple relearn where you turn the key on, slowly push pedal to floor and slowly return to top. I didn't do that myself just fired it up and regular driving.

I ended up replacing the throttle body and gasket. Cleared the codes and drove it a bit here and there. It seems to be running fine and no codes are popping up.

Final update. Two weeks later and the car has been running fine and no issues. New throttle body seems to have been the answer.

Excellent, glad to hear it.
