Hi,

what is the right installation procedure for transmission filter?

I mean, that some guys says, that the clip bolted on the transmission body should be under the filter and some guys say that it should be above the filter bushing the filter against the fluid pan.

So, which is right one or better manner for the installation?

The car is Buick GN ´87 with TH 200- 4r transmission.

Hi,

I have now the right instructions to the filter installation: the metal clip bolted on the valve body shall locate above the filter, pushing it against the fluid pan body.

An another thing, there is the fluid filters in the shops for sale where is the quite narrow, single o- ring on the filter neck. It is possible, that it can`t prevent the air sugging in to the pump.

Have a nice evening!

Good information. I rebuilt a TH200-R4 for a Regal turbo coupe quite some time ago and don't remember that detail. Perhaps they aftermarket has changed the pickup tube seal design?

Thanks Blue Bowtie for your answer!

Yes, seems to be so, that some or very many filter makers are offering the filter with the single narrow o-ring seal on the filter neck(the profile is about 2 mm), which have not good always, too loose and not keeping its shape in the use . Earlier the seal was about 6 mm or more high, which I have seen for instance AC Delco filters for many years ago.

But, you have of course the possibility to purchase the good quality o-rings matching the original o-ring, and install three pieces of them on the filter neck instead of the original.

Should be working better.

Comments, thank you!

Hi,

I will comment myself:

Please check the clearance between the oil pan body and the filter body before the installation procedure of the pan if you use three o-rings. it can happen for some reasons, that the filter neck does not go too up into pump bore and the pan will not seat in it,s place. It can happen.

So, if you are not sure regarding the original o-ring quality, please use the one
better quality same size o-ring.
