I've got a 2002 Chevy s-10 4 wheel drive. Don't drive it a whole lot but I've now noticed the transmission won't shift properly or go up through the gears when I accelerate. It's like it's stuck or something

roadbum,
Welcome to Automotive Forums..
it could be something simple.. start with checking fluid at temp..
a lower fluid amount would cause lack of, or slow/harsh shifts;
or it could be that the TVS cable is stretched, or come loose from the
throttle body intake??
start simple, then work to worst case scenario..

Well the fluid was extremely low at one point almost to the point of not moving. I put fresh fluid in and it will roll down the highway but it just wont go through the gears properly

how many miles? was it functioning properly last drive; or has this progressively gotten worse? when you pulled stick to add, did it smell like burnt trans fluid? when you say 'roll down the highway', does this mean you can drive and get to hwy speeds, but it just slowly accelerates to those speeds; no physical shift and rpm increase/decrease when you hit a shift point to go from gear to gear?

Specifically, which ranges will function? Also, does manually shifting the ranges change the shift quality?

As I increase speed the tranny just won't shift through the gears. I don't smell anything like burnt tranny fluid. I can't get up to highway speeds (50 to 60 mph etc.)

as Blue Bowtie suggested, if 'manually' going through the automatic 1/2/3/D gears does not engage the trans manually, it might be a TVs cable; low fluid, or damaged valve body.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz the GM DEXRON III IS a fluid that creates acid @20K miles, change the fluid and filter . use DEXRON VI [6] .. gm DUMPED III in 2006.. old GM died in 2008 lost billions ,,,. because of recall failures. now if the transmission works after the fluid change .. then change the fluid again after a few hundred miles. valves in the tranny stick ..I used transmedic additive on my old GM vehicles no issues.
