Metal piece on battery

As I was driving home from work tonight my car freaks out and lights start going off and on and all that good stuff. I put it in park and check my battery, which is in my trunk, and sure enough my battery cover gave way to a piece of metal I had back there, and now it’s stuck. I attempted to move it with pliers and a pair of gloves, but as soon as it budged it sparked big time. Any suggestions? I can post pictures in the AM once I wake up.

If it sparks when you try to remove it, that suggests there is some space between it and at least one of the battery terminals. Any chance you can slide something non-conductive between it and the terminal while you work to remove it?
