Airtrax 1/24 FERRARI 330 GTC

After building a few nearly box-stock Tamiya kits to remember how its done, hone some techniques, and feel the airbrush again, I decided it was time to do another serious, all-out, old-school, superdetail project. Long time ago I have purchased an Airtrax transkit to build a car that I consider one of the most beautiful Ferraris of the late 60’s – the gorgeous 330 GTC.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49872283552_71d69bdb72_b.jpg

Traditional 2-seater coupe 330 GTC (Gran Turismo Coupe) was unveiled at 1966 Geneva autoshow as an additional model to the Ferrari lineup and sloted between 275 GTB (on which chassis it is built) and more upscale 330 GT 2+2. The body was designed and built by Pininfarina.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871972971_e9f3dc8b8f_b.jpg

Over the 2-year period through the end of 1968, Ferrari made a total of 598 cars (both RHD and LHD). 330 GTC was considered by many to be the most elegant model in the Ferrari lineup. Beautiful body lines were complimented well by the powerful 12-cylinder engine and nicely appointed luxury cabin with spacious trunk. The car was no slouch and handled great too.

Transkit is very simple, and contains a body, few interior pieces, some external bits, and a fret of photoetched parts. Disclaimer: I’m in no way trying to bash people who made the trasnkit in my following descriptions of the parts and the quality overall – I’m thankful it exists and somebody made it.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871889921_1bfda6c9d6_b.jpg

The resin castings are pretty horrible, but overall correct as far as proportions go.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871358118_3a5d7d66ae_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871890356_514fd48506_b.jpg

Quality of resin casting is pretty bad. Lots of bubbles, uneven and partially lost panel lines, parts that are not completely (fully) cast, and body shell thicker than my finger. Poop.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871357978_b6a6bcdd45_b.jpg

But, nobody did anything better since this was released, so we have what we have. There will be a lot of work to make this look worthy of calling a replica, like fixing bent parts like this:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49872199952_4877f70bb4_b.jpg

The glass vacuuforms are very vague, the front does not fit.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49872199882_e6f2cb749f_b.jpg

Other parts are not much better, some are just wrong. Just look at the seats….

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49872199727_770e843105_b.jpg

Luckily, photoetch is of great quality, and will be very useful:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871889961_3427e2806b_b.jpg

That’s all for now. As a base for the model, I will use Italeri 275 GTS kit.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49871889846_3d0cc2b422_b.jpg

There will be obviously any other things and sets used, like wheels, etc. Not decided 100% on the color as of right now. Wish me luck.

I will watch this one with great interest.
I can remember very well when I built mine, it was a true PITA.
But it is worth the effort, it will be a beauty when you make it to the end.

Thank you! I didn't know you built this - any pictures of the finished model? I'm having a hard time to find anything or anybody who built this kit! George's model is the only one as far as I know.

I built one long time ago... ;)

Sorry for the inconvenience and no offence taken. After all i did not cast them. Great to see that you have decided to take this as your next project.

I didn't take any back then.
Took just 2 quick ones from my showcase.

Paint is Zero's Oro Chiaro.

If you decide to go full detail I recommend to change the head lights for some different ones. The clear resin isn't "clear" at all.

Niko, I know you did not cast it, no apologies needed! You did great job with the master, like I said, the proportions almost spot on! I think I might have gotten a late copy, the molds must have started to deteriorate on this one. But it will get done and will be a good looking lady :)

Thanks for the pictures, the car looks great built! Now that you mentioned it, I do remember seeing your build back then.

Look forward to see this come together. A beautiful Ferrari but aren't they all (at least most of them).

Haha, so true - old Ferraris are all beautiful!

As it happens, I’m very enthusiastic about the project for a few days, so this is the time to accomplish a lot if you want to advance in the build beyond “I’m burned out on this” stage 😊 The body was cleaned up, all bubbles filled, panel lines corrected and re-scribed, body block-sanded, smoothed, corrected in spots, and overall made ready for test fitting the rest of the components:

There is still a lot of work on the body, but at least I can start working with other bits knowing general proportions and shapes.

A 12-cylinder Ferrari should have a motor! And what is the point in putting a motor in a model, if you can’t see it, right?

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49881468247_7859e823c4_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyEB)IMG_1464 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyEB) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

The new hood will be made out of .010 brass. The overall shape was done by beating the brass into shape (like Pininfarina in the 60-s!)

Got the overall shape right:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49881468142_f45725865d_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyCN)IMG_1465 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyCN) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

In this process it is imperative not to rush and check your work often:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49881158371_cf4cd8b48b_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZPYxV)IMG_1468 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZPYxV) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Then I spent some time re-shaping and perfecting the curve:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49881158236_8520c8f9c2_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZPYvA)IMG_1474 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZPYvA) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

After the general shape was right, I cut the resin hood out:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49880633353_03cfa1fb65_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZMhtT)IMG_1490 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZMhtT) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

The thickness of the casting is crazy!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49880633283_24efbab86b_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZMhsF)IMG_1492 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZMhsF) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Test fit to make sure the curve is right:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49881468617_53386a92fb_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyLZ)IMG_1494 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyLZ) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Then I ground the resin from the back side to make the opening appear like sheet metal – more or less. It will be thinned some more later on.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49880632333_40d05dc23a_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZMhbi)IMG_1502 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZMhbi) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Then I cut the brass piece to fit the newly reshaped opening:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49881468547_ba6fcc13f1_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyKM)IMG_1506 (https://flic.kr/p/2iZRyKM) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Then spent some time making sure all the gaps are right and tight, and the shape of the hood is correct. Preliminary coat of metal etch and gray primer to see the result:

One of the reasons I made the hood out of brass is the fact that you can solder stuff to it! That comes handy when you need to solder a hinge to the hood :)

Next we are moving to cutting the chassis to fir the body. It wasn’t really bad, but some changes had to be made – this is what it looked like before I started – obviously it does not fit:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49911029827_3039d9b965_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j3t5i2)IMG_1511 (https://flic.kr/p/2j3t5i2) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Removed all marked by ovals, and split the chassis where rectangular mark is, then measured the correct wheel base and reattached all together:

Still some work to do with fine adjustments, but the basic shape is there and I can work with fitting engine bay and interior.

Engine bay still missing the firewall and I still need to move inner fenders, but the axle is sitting straight and dead center in the arches – which is good!

In the rear I made sure arches fit the fenders and there is enough room for the interior and rear package shelf:

I don't even know if I should continue with this here as it doesn't seem to garner much interest, but here is next update.

Next phase was making sure interior parts fit the body and the chassis. Made the interior piece straight by boiling it in water:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49934473446_2dd82bc015_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xegm)IMG_1570 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xegm) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Also bent the front body piece to correct curve:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49934473506_faaca24aef_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xeho)IMG_1569 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xeho) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Fixed the chassis to the body, I started fitting interior elements:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49934778712_fa192d40d2_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5yN1y)IMG_1564 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5yN1y) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Dashboard is not poured all the way, and had a huge hole in it.*

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49934473586_59cd9b619e_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xeiL)IMG_1567 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xeiL) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

You think this will be noticeable on the completed model? Really Airtrax?

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49933959248_f39e737713_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5uApS)IMG_1563 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5uApS) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Or maybe this gap in the back? How can you make a kit where parts don't fit to each other THAT bad?

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49934473826_3314d71da5_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xenU)IMG_1562 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5xenU) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Filled the gap with some putty:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49934778427_2be8d0f1ce_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2j5yMVD)IMG_1571 (https://flic.kr/p/2j5yMVD) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Before I could fill the dash, decided to fit the firewall - used modified piece from Italeri kit.*

Still lots to do before I can even call this a kit!

Great work so far Alex. A friend gave me an Airtrax Alfa 2600 that he wants me to build for him and the castings are at least as bad if not worse than this. He said he didn't care how long I took so needless to say it's not high on the build list. You've at least given me some ideas for when I finally build up the ambition to try and tackle it.

I don't know why this isn't getting much interest. This is modeling to the max. I doubt many could overcome the severe problems with this model. Keep going, please.

Mike, I think I might have seen these Alfa kits, and while great subject, they are a lot of work. Probably more than this one here. Too bad, this had a lot of promise.

Yup, keeping myself honest here. Thanks!

That is a good way to put it. Maybe I just got a kit from a bad batch...or something. :)

Alex, thank you so much for showing us this build. I have the Airtrax Aston Martin DBS kit and like yours there is a huge amount of work, so much so I haven't touched it for 6 years.

Watching your build is showing me the light. Please keep sharing your progress, I am really looking forward to seeing the final result.

Can I please ask what you used to fill the holes and what putty would you recommend?

Many thanks

Philip

Thanks Philip - will post some updates soon.
I use mostly Milliput 2-part, or Tamiya epoxy putties.

Wellll on the not getting much interest - just check the view numbers of this versus your other threads. This one is well ahead of them and those threads, or rather the resulting cars, were a pleasure to watch.
With this I'm just sitting back and asking myself the same questions you do. How can something like this be released with a fit that bad. Is there no trial fit after creating the prototypes? Boggles the mind really. It'll be interesting if you can salvage it and pull of a result like the RX-7.

Good to see you back Alex, you've been away for longer than me! I haven't posted since my epic MFH 250lm build and that was over two years ago.
I'm really enjoying watching a kit as poor as this being transformed it's very satisfying to do and to watch.
I hope to be back with a build myself soon if I can find a good free photo host...
best of luck with the build.

I only come online once every few months or so since I've long stopped building. Every time I come in and see your work it's an inspiration/invitation to get back to it!

Keep up the amazing work!

Looking at your work with that hood, you really must be out of your mind! Amazing!

And it´s so nice to see a real WIP from a real AF-member between all that covert-advertising of Alpha-models.

I'll be honest, I have not touched it since last update, too much work lately, plus have been working on my 1:1 projects more than on my 1:24 scale. but I do have a small update below.

Haha, thanks.

Ok, all these posts above made me get this out of the box and fiddle with it a bit over the weekend - that s until we lost power and almost froze to death here in Texas. Aaaaanyway...

Got most of the interior parts to fit together, more or less:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50957383587_702df6da8b_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2kCVUP6)IMG_7710 (https://flic.kr/p/2kCVUP6) by Italian Horses (https://www.flickr.com/photos/110335038@N06/), on Flickr

Not only that - but also worked a bit on making everything fit nicely inside the body as well:

Everything lines up nicely now, which is good. Still need to adjust the chassis relative to the body a bit - my axles are not entirely centered in the arches.

Fantastic work going on here, having done a few rough resin kits (not MFH or S27), I know the work you are putting in on this!
Please keep posting, looking forward to seeing the first paint going on.
