I replaced my hood shocks on a 96 park avenue.the original shocks had the shock on top with the rod end pointing down. The new shocks mounted with shocks on bottom with rod end pointing up. They could not be mounted any differently because the mounting hole were different sizes preventing them to be mounted as the original shocks. I checked if I had been sent the proper shock according to part number. It was # 4627 strongarm. Will these new shocks mounted in this position cause an operational or longevity issue? I have also sent this question to strongarm company for their input.

I doubt that the gas spring will care, since most of its life it will be compressed and in a horizontal position.
FWIW, I've seen some vehicles with liftgates uning similar gas springs, one installed one way and the other installed the opposite way. They seem to work fine.
Hopefully the seller will get back to you with clear information.

I got a response from the shock company-They said they changed the design to make the shocks last longer.
