1/8 VW GOLF GTI MK2 stance project - An italian job

Hi to everybody.
My name is Francesco and I'm from Italy and 41 years old.

I knowed this forum by some link of italian people that are registered in this beatiful forum
I saw and read some fantastic and awesome topic....and the modelling level here is very very high....i love modelling but i'm a newbie/beginner level

I love models and my only scale is 1/8, my favourite model are F1, WRC and self made tuned.
My model are:
Mclaren Mp4/4 1988 Ayrton Senna F1 World Champion 1/8 Kyosho (completed but restoring mode)

Golf II GTI 1/8 Tuned project in progress Hachette collection (first version now dismantled to remade the project)

I've stated this project 1 year ago, but i must leave it for another timeline project

Finally in the last 3 months i re-started the work on my gti.

Watching the staus, i'm not satisfy of the result reached

I’ve started a tuned/stanced project but i decided to remade it with extra details to try to add more realism to my model.

The engine kit i think is a PB engine
Here i started to work on block.
I made hole for engine lift
I scribed the head that was absent
I now repainted the block in iron mica, the head will be painted in allumium block.

I repainted the head with tamiya silver leaf, and whole gearbox and differential in gloss alluminium

I added the missing wire from distributor to ignition coil and i full remade the plug wire with red cable (like Magnecore)

I repainted in green the gearbox cap like on my 1:1 GTI. In the future i'll put a decal vw logo on the gearbox cap.

I dediced to fill the inside wheel arch with milliput to give more deep and cover the flat and toy look plastic

I started the work on engne bay.

The kit give engine bay separeted from chassis.

I "welded" the engine bay and i started to rebuilt the spar that was all wrong in the model (just notched the chassis)

FInally i try a first check for the inside clearence between chassis and and engine.

I continued the work on engine bay. With fiber bond iI filled the self made side pods.

I self made a new water tank bracket with alu stripe and I filled the hole on side strut.

With the help of Lego bricks I made the missed servobrake and i made a new fitting sistem on engine firewall.

I started to selfmade (just finish the final shape) a new clutch lever on gearbox to replicate the future clutch cable (totally missed in the kit)

Thanks to much Malscar, I try to do my best.

I coated in primer the engine bay to highlight the faults.

I decided to eliminate the wiper tank. I'll fitted an extra engine oil cooling radiator. I remade a modified radiator and i self made a first version of cooling duct.

I checked the clearence between bonnet and radiator duct...It's too near. I decided to remade a new shape of duct.

I added joint to radiator for future braided hose

I start to modified the inside high beam projector to create a Venturi duct for cooling the extra radiator.
I removed the fluted glass and i fitted a metal mesh. Before to finish this work I need to work the headlight for fit the mesh properly.

Before to proceed with other engine or gearbox details, i remade whole engine mount system.

The kit has only 1 (the gearbox and also is not completed) of 3 engine mount.

I remade with my best for my skills, the 3 engine mount.

I reinforced the front struts and i used a modified lego brick to match the right angle for front mount

The rear (timing belt side) was totally missing.
I self made an alu bracket.

The two rear engine mount are fixed on subframe to make easier the future fitting of subframe and arms.

Before continuing with engine bay (missing some ribs on firewall to be replicated) I make some adjustment work.

The oil sump is missing of a parts of block. With styrene I did the new piece (in the next days i’ll paint with color of block)
The timing cover is missing of the rear cover.....with styrene i did also this.

My attention was to the air intake sistem.

I don’t like the oem filter, so i decided to try to replicate the CDA of bmc (that I have really fitted on my Gti mk3)

I modified the intake hose.
With lego bricks i made the MAF sensor and I used the upper control unit from the 1/8 kit.

I finally made the futur carbon box of CDA.

With help of PataFix i fitted all the new system to check clearence and space.

Next step will be:

- fully moulding with putty of hoses and air box
- repainting and use shrink tube for part of hoses
- carbon coating of filter box
- new bracket to fix the new airbox.

I’do my best to give more deep to firewall.

With self made paper template i draw the mouldings.

After cheking the size, i’ll made with styrene and then i fixxed

A fast primer coat to check....i think is quite good and looks like the real firewall

Finally i check clearence with engine an bodyshell....at the moment is good and it's all

I continued the extra add on engine.

The engine (particularly the gearbox) kit is missing of some detail.
I add the check hole for timing on flywheel...then i painted it in green
I replicate a single gear linkage (as like a Delta hf integrale that i build few months ago)

I finished extra detail on clutch leverage

I started to fix timing cover, alternator (which i added a cable) and water pump. I need fitted these elements to adjust the mistake of the kit for cooling and wiring.

I covered with bare metak foil the spark plugs to imitate the original.

I did my personal best to replicate the clutch cable.

With metal wire I did the first visible section.

With a drinking straw, shrink and rubber wire I replicated the clutch cable.

The oil level is orrible from the kit, I remade by myself

I remade the hydraulic joint on the head (i added 2 slot for sensor and future wiring)

Finally i started the work on pulley, i separated them from the printed belt. I’ll made a belt from shrink or elastic.

I continued the work on engine.

I remade the support/radiator of oil filter.
I also add 2 extra joints for extra custom radiator.

The injectors-fuel rail is very poor from the kit.
I added a lego brick to simulate the fuel pressure regulator and 2 joints for fuel lines.
I also added 4 tube that want remember the 4 injectors.
Finally i painted the rail in metallic red and titanium gold the regulator.
To match the 4 injectors to right size i filled the gap between the duct.

I selfmade the vapors oil canister with lego brick, i coated it with bare metal foil; i added the hose level and joint to connect to other joint on rocker cover.

I also fitting the new metal coolant pipes adding the missing hose to waterpump.

I fitted the engine starter and finally I fitted the inlet manifold.

I continued with inlet system.

I added the idle bypass adj screw to the throttle body. Next step (i missed and it will be to add the hose to fuel pressure regulator for preheat valve)

I painted the throttle in flat alluminium and i fix it to intake hose with a hidden screw. Finally i add shrink tube and alu tie.

I remade the hose from the idle air stabilizer to inlet duct. I made with a new pond wire coated with shrink tube.

I added real m 1.4 bolt on alternator bracket than i fixxed it on engine

Finally i start an hard work on exhaust manifold.
The kit give a curious manifold with only a duct.

I added the missing 3 duct and i “solded” them with Ciano and bicarbonate.

Nex step i’ll moulded the new manifold and I’ll try to made the flange to head (very hard for space)

After 2 working week on my mk3 1:1, I continued with engine.

I remade the hose coolant. I simulated the use of metal hose with silicone joint

After this I started to made the first part of engine harness. i self made the bracket fixxed on gearbox to fix the plug of harness

To this connection i plugged the wire for:

- oil pressure
- oil temperatur
- knocking sensor
- alternator cable
- water temperatur
- engine temperatur
- distributor cable

I also self made another wiring part totally missed

- idle motor cable
- water tempaeratur head
- rail injection cable

To this harness i also add the wiring of MAF sensor

Finally i added the wiring no starter motor

I start to work on radiator. In the kit the radiator was totally absent, just only fairing and fan. Watching the engine is really poor and bad view.

On the real radiator fairing the vent are opened.
I opened these vents hole to evacuate the cold air (in the future i’ll decide if mantein rubber flap with alu stopper like on original vw fairing or selfmade a new exhaust vent as i saw in some vw meetings)

I used a radiator from an 1/10 rc and i adapted it with lego brick to the shape of fairing....now it seems just little bit a cooling radiator

I modified the radiator for the future extra air inlet hose for the extra oil cooler. The cut side of radiator will be remodeled with some styrene

I holed inside engine bay for front brake lines and fuel lines

Finally i give 2 primer coats to underbody and engine bay. Tomorrow i painted it with new color: sky blue ral 5015

Before to paint chassis in blue, i tried to selfmade and replicate with iron wire the brake lines.
Now that I find the correct shape of brake lines, i come back to work on master brake cylinder to add some joint and a better finish look.

Suddendly the 3 paint coat of blue to chassis and engine bay. I choose this color because is too similar to "Blau color concept golf MK3" and because i like it very much.

I continued the work on engine.

After adding the 3 missing exhaust ducts, i painted the manifold in alu and 2 final smoke coats.
To give some burn look i used tamiya powder wheatering.
I also wrapped the warm air filter duct with aluminium foil.

I started the modded work on radiator fairing. With modified lego brick i selfmade a new cold air extractor.
I also add weld lines, new joint hose and metal mesh.

I little detailed the cranck, waterpump and alternator pulley. With insulating tape i self made the belt.

Finally i holed and insert some pins for the new hose connection for MAF sensor.

Finally a pre test fitting un engine bay.

Some few progress but a big solving problem with engine (the extra add coolant hose to heater core)

In the kit was present only one hose that have a particular shape. This hose creates some impeding (specially to extra brake lines added previous)

So i decided to remade the new hoses using a sprue.

To maintain the hose in position, i made a hole and i insert a pin in each hose (after a little moulding job)

I dry fitted the hose and i checked the clearance on firewall for extra add of brake lines.

It’s seems fits good, next step painting and adding silicone hose joint.

I finally fitted engine inside bay.

Before fitting engine i finished job on master cylinder brake. I add som nut to ricreate the nut joint for brake lines

I used some stripes of insulating tape to create fixing grommet for brake lines mounted on firewall.

With styrene i selfmade the exhaust heat shield and finally i taped it with alu tapes.

I also selfmade the bracket for vapor oil canister, and i also added 2 nuts.

I used tamiya braided hose for 2 fuel lines, and i holed the firewall to insert the first part of engine wiring.

Finally i fixxed the engine and i connected the vapor oil canister to vent joint on rocker cover.

Before continuing with engine, i made with insulating tape the inside mudguard. If was a oem ride eight i could use a 0.25 mm styrene sheet. But if I used it, my chassis would be raised....and this is not good.

I fitted the selfmade hoses for heater core.

Remembering the Delta HF WRC water canister, I decided to reproduce it also in my GTI.
I started my work using a AA dummy batteries.
After some work, I obtained the wanted shape. I holed the tank for future connection and future bracket on engine struct.

Finally i coated it with bare metal foil and i added hoses using a tube with same color of G12 liquid.

I repainted the fan with gray haze, and i add some detail to radiator fairing (some alu tape on top face of radiator, some alu tape on fan motor and connection for hose to canister and temp sensor)

I also fitted the selfmade clutch cable.

To maintain a little bit clean engine bay, I decided to build a partially hidden engine wiring (all the invisible wiring run inside the chassis)

Yesterday i quite finished engine coolant system. Just only the final hose from canister to radiator.

I also create another partially hidden engine wiring (it runs nearly the struct and hides inside the left chassis spar)
I cabled the rear light switch, the speedo cable and the oli temp sendor for gearbox and differential (this last is my add and not present on real GTI)

Then i worked for fitting the hose from canister to radiator: With insulating tape i selfmade grommet to fix hose on side left structs. This hose will be partially hidden from extra oil cooler and battery (battery will be lifted to permit the run of other wiring)

Finally i made new bracket for extra oil cooler (i used the present hole inside the engine bay)

Engine 90% completed: just to finish carbon coating of bmc cda airbox, carbon fairing of extra oil cooler and some waterslide decal for engine.

I lifted the battery to permit the housing of coolant pipe and wiring of fan and water temp radiator bulb.

I full remade the throttle cable bracket and new cable with adjusting nut.

Remade the vacuum hose for servobrake.

I connected with braided hose the extra oil cooler radiator

I added the heatshield for all exhaust system (the exhaust is only to show the line....will be total remade)

I carbon decal the CDA filter airbox and the oil cooler fairing. Also i add the oil filter decal. Other engine decals will come later

I Finished the engine and my attention swing to one of my preferite parts of car: the exhaust system
Like on my real gti i deleted central an middle silincer to obtain a direct flow exhaust
I also deleted the oem twin tailpipes and added a big bore tailpipe like sport inox exhaust N group (like Bastuck sport auspuff)
I used the chassis as template to finf correct shape of my new exhaust system
I coated it with a first primer coat to check anything to rework. Then putty and a new paper sanding. Then i reprimered, i coated with white aluminium paint and a final smoke TS71 coat (specially in the first section of the system)
While I'm waiting the drying of exhaust paint, i redid all the brake lines fitted on underbody. I fitted the chassis grommet and i uses 1 mm metal wire for new brake lines. I self made new hydraulic joint for brake lines and i jointed them on new rear braking distributor.

I also added new selfmade alu clamps with bolts on exhaust, i added some weld lines.
I finished the work on manifold with thermal banding.
To reach the right color i painted it with a first coat of titanium gold and finally a smoke coat
Suddendly i used the tamiya powdwers to light the exhaust point (blu and red burn effect). I also lighted the tailpipe to simulate the heating due backfires.
I also wheatered the chassis heatshield and finally i fitted my full illegal exhaust system..[lol]

I full remade the fuel pump and filter. I added new top studio joint and i repainted all fuel pump and filter
I differently painted the joint for inlet and return in red and blu metallic
I added some photo etched bolt to head of fuel pump
I also changed all hoses with braided hoses.
I self made new hose from fuel pump to engine.
Finally i revisited the fuel tank working on stripes in bare metal and adding some fixing bolts

I full repainted in matt black (2 final clear coat matt) the subframe, arms, rear axle and front engine bar
I detailed some bolts and added fixing nuts for the arms
In the past months i mistakenly painted in gun metal the bracket for rear axle. In the real gti this piece is part of the chassis....so i repainted in new blu color like frame.

I finished the job with front and rear axle. To fit properly the new rims i machined a rc 1/10 hub adapter from 4,5 to 6 mm. With this new size now the rc center adapter fit on hub (disc are only dry fitted for have right size and clearence)
In the nexts post i’ll write a “flashback post” to show the previous work do on absorber fully reworked and converted in airride system.
The extra engine mount bracket works properly with right wheel shaft. Also the shafts can work good with chassis notching
I fitted the stabilizer bar and finally i painted the chassis rubber grommets
I fitted the bodyshell to check if all is good and for have test with new N group tailpipe.

Here the flashback work
I started to work on my gti 1 1/2 years ago, but i stopped it for other project.
In the past i made the work and conversion to lower it.
I shortened the gearbox shaft and i did the chassis notching both sides.
I also made some details to inner joint and clips on cowlings
I leave the springs and shortened the dampers and i added some o-ring to imitate the bags. I also yellow repainted the dampers to simulate use of bilstein.

I started the work on brake system. The caliper and disc out of box are quite hugly.
The caliper kit are in 2 pieces, i want it monobloc like the real
The disc are correct but without personality for my project
I dediced to use the rc disc that are metal and drilled. Another postive point id that the disc is also centre hub for rim, but i need to work because rc disc is quite larger then oem kit
So i made the same work on real big brake conversion: i remade the caliper bracket using a m6 large washer.
I “welded” with cianoacrylate and bicarbonate the caliper to washer. Ase template to have right fitting i use a 6mm drill and i clamped washer to disc...than i made some “welding point”. Finally i finished the welding job.
Imho the disc brake is more good looking
Next step: putty, sanding and final painting.

I think to have finished the brake system and underbody.
The brake caliper are blank. I made the hole to remind like the original 1:1 caliper
The front caliper have also a strange shape, i do my best to replicate a shape quite similar
I first primer coated the calipers, second silver coat and finally the red paint.
I worked on rear brake distributor adding the joints for rear brake connection
The kit was totallu missing the handbrake cables, i did my best to made it
I placed all the system, just a final little wheatering and i think the underbody is completed

I started the work on the interior.
In the previuos project i had also flocked with felt the floor. The kit was born only in plastic without carpet
My new project is to elimanate the rear seat and add a roll cage.....my fault is having partecipate in over 10 edition of Woerthersee :rotfl:
I modified the trunk floor and seat to have a complete open trunk.
My friend produced a new machined alu air tank for airride system
I also take the rear Delta HF 1/8 struts bar (will be modify) to use as fixing for next 4 point seat belts.
I also check the measure for roll cage, i found a rc 1/10 roll cage to modify (erase the light) but that have quite good measure.

While I wait felt and rollcage, i started the work on door cards.
First job is to correct an hachette error. The kit has diveided door (metal) from inside structur (in gray plastic). Hachette thinked that was part oof door card......on 1:1 golf is part of the door all metal and one-piece. So i "welded" the 2 part with ciano and bicarbonate.
I also stated the work on door cards: i lowewered on front and rear cards the armrest to permit the fitting of a new flat styrene panel.
I tryed to imitate the carbon door cards of Carbontech
I make 4 hole.
2 for inside cable to open door
1 to apply the belt to pull the door
1 for glass cranck.
The metal wire and yellow belt is only to show...not necessary the final combo material/color

FInally i worked the panel, painted in black and final carbon decal. I'll decide if mantein black pillars or coat also with felt.
A first primer coat to doors to watch some details that need to rework.

I quite finished the felt work on modify rear seats and luggage.
It remains to coat with felt the spare wheeks compartment.
I added a yellow belt to easily lift the panel of spare wheel

While i'm waiting the roll cage (to be modify) i continued the work on other parts
I bought over one years ago steering and seat as spare parts from Delta HF integrale 1/8
I'll use Delta steering for GTi and also a couple of Delta navigator seats (steering and seat will be reworked and modified)
Finally I also took a couple of seat belts (Delta) to made a new 4 point seat belts

I flocked all floor and central tunnel to cover the bad plastic kit
I add some little detail to gearknob, handbrake (like 20years edition) and a final detail to seat belts clips (that will be removed for 4 points belts)
I continued with carbon decal work. I worked the central consolle, i selfmade the template for carbon and finally i coated with decal and 3 final clear coat.

I worked on dashboard
All the dash vents are blanked. I drilled out them to give a little more deep and better view.
I self made a panel with styrene to add ob central vent. This panel will be the support for arride manometers.
I threaded the steering column to change the screw with a hex bolt
I remade the shape of the switch behind steering
I repainted the box under the dash and i added selfmade carpets doing with a glasses cloth.
With 0,3 mm alu foil I remade the pedals, i added the skid proof only to throttle and brake pedal.

Dashboard 2/2
The column steering cover had a hole without nothing. I add a red rivet to simulate the starting switch.
With shrink i self made the cover for steering hub.
I used a Delta steering wheel, i sprayed black to try recreating a flocked view on crown.
I painted in alu the spokes and added Momo decals and the yellow centering stripe.
I finished the work on extra manometers for arride.

I finished the mod on rollcage, i check all clearance, and then I'll start the filling work on this and i'll paint in blue.

Yesterday in the afternoon I dedicated myself to the construction of the rest of the struts bars.
Before doing these, I coated the roof trim with thin adhesive flocking.
I’ll do the same work on front and rear pillars cover.
I then started from the simplest strut bar: the rear.
I used 2 lego brik to recreate the anchor plates and I use the 6mm plastic rod. This bar will then be used for anchoring the 5-point belts.
It was then the turn of the front bar which is just a little bit complicated.
First research was to find something for the plates to be placed on the front struts.
The diameter on the dome measures 14mm .... A pair of scooter gearbox shims help me in this work
I started working on the shims.
Both Wiechers and other brands (JOM or Bonrath) have a reinforcement on plates... I reproduced it with plastic and finally I positioned the front strut bar.
For the bar I used a plastic rod with an internal 2mm wire insert. The rod used to hardening the structure and I also used this system to bend the bar without crushing the tube.
I then applied the nut to the bar to adjust the bar tension.
I Placed the plates in position on the domes with a double-sided tape and finally I pointed the bar with a drop of cyan.
I Disassembled everything and then I finished “to weld” it with cyan and bicarbonate.
This afternoon I will go sanding, primer and painting of the whole group(rollcage and domed bars)

While primer coat is drying on strut bars and rollacage i moved on Seats.
I removed the black paint and i stat to flock the seat.
I use the self adhesive flocking (0.8 m) uded for jewel
Now i'have to study how to place the "Recaro" or "Corbeau" decal on headrest.
I finished the clear coat work on carbon door trim.

While i'm waiting the drying paint of rollcage and strut bars, i worked on seat brackets
I've seen many brackets (Sparco, OMP, Recaro, Rennsport and Wiechers), so i reproduced a custom bracket using Lego that for me are prefcet with size and shape
After a quick size and fit checking, i smoothed the bracket and i holed them for a futur fixing with 1.4 nut and bolt
Before to check the rollcage I removed from the rear carbon trim the central pillar cover....everything is good with good clearence
I then fitted the rear and front struts bar and i think looks is goood and enhance the general view of my little GTI

I finished the paint work on seat bracket: 1 primer coat, 2 matt black coat and 2 final clear matt coat
To fix the barcket on floor i use M 1,4 bolts and nuts
I use a longer rear bolt to fix the belts, but many friends tell me is good looking a dedicated bolts to fix them
I fitted a new bolt for future belts system
I made some test with 3 possible belts color: I asked to some tuning friends and model frieds. I choose finally the black belts. I think is more elegant

I started the paint work on body.
Before to paint i filled the hole of wiper and i removed the blanked cap for antenna on left fornt fender.
So i started to dand, primer and check all....after 3 times i reached a good job to finally paint in blue.
Doors and seats are finished with also 3 final coat of clear coat.
Fenders and trunk only painted with 3 blue coat and need final clear coat

I'm continuing with paintwork and I'm arrived to bodyshell.
I removed all balck trim and stripes, i coat with primer. I check all defects and and i give another primer coat.
I finallu paint the bodyshell with 4 coat of blue.
I removed the iniejcton point from bonnet and i paint it with same ways of bodyshell
Before to coat all with clear, I polished all with silicone remover, than i coated with 3 layer of clear
I masked all bosyshell and i painted the roof trim. I meade the trim for doors, windows and trunk with rubber tape.

I flocked the pillars like on my 1:1 GTI
I worked on carbon door card. I add a rounf frame on manual glass knob, I add a yellow stripe to close the door and a metal wire to open the door.....and finally I adde a Metal knob to regulate the mirror.
I also fitted the last rubber trim on trunk

I quite completed the hatch
i remade the rubber trim of rear glass, and also i modified the rear license plate light bar as "Cult Society" light bar like on my 1:1 mk3
I also added some PE bolts anfd paint the license lights.
I fitted also the 5 point seat belts using the rear struts bar
I worked on airride tank system. I machined an alu tnak, i added the inlet and outlet air connection. I assed the black rubber stripes and i fixxed with yellow belts
Like one my GTI 1:1 i made the bracket for CDA of BMC.
I also fitted the oil engine radiator carbon duct.
When the front girll will be fitted i added the hose to duct the air to airbox and radiatore
Some details (some bolts and decal set taht it's coming) and engine compartment is completed.

I placed the viper cover adding a battery cut off swhitch.
I completed the roof trim and finally i placed hatch, bonnet and doors.
Next week i hope will arrive the decal set to fianally fit chassis with bodyshell

I’m finally arrived to marriage chassis and bodyshell
Before make this, i stripped out the chrome from rear badge and I repainted them in semi matt black
I adjusted the height of door hinges to match all panel lines
I worked on tail light to match the combo color lenses of the Golf Special edition. I also flocked the inside of tail lights
I also give some detail to front radiator bar: I drilled the blankes holes and repainted in titanium gold the bonnet latch. I’ll add in the future some final PE and bolts.

I completed the inlet air system for oil cooler radiator duct. The yellow hose start from the removesd high beam light and link to radiator duct.
To fix the metal mesh i machined the lenses of high beam light. I also add the bixenon bulb on black headlight.
To reach a total dark look I black painted the mesh....i also added the PE screw for beam regulation.
I did some detail work adding some head bolts on Airbox bracker and radiator bracket, at the end i completed the last air hose inlet for airbox.

I was arrived to the end of this long project that began almost 4 years ago with various stops and start.
During the week should arrive all decals (including license plate and VIN) and then I'll do the final outdoor photo set
I worked on his home case a nd I reuse some spares parts fixxed on the wall...like on my 1:1 garage of my mk3.

I completed the last work on my GTI and now i’m arrived to the end.
I finished the work on central cap....i placed Rial because i love this brand and i didn’t like BBS.
