1994 Transport Revs when it Should be Idling

I have owned this vehicle for nearly 20 years so I know it pretty well. For the last two the engine light is on almost continuously, and the only fault is unwarranted revving of the engine at traffic lights. This can be controlled by playing with the clutch as it's the basic manual model built for the European market with the 2.3 litre engine. In spite of its age it has not yet completed 100,000 miles and has been well treated. I suspect a faulty Engine Management Unit but I should like advice of other possible factors. Is the EMU or ECU the same on the 2.3 as the other American models, the 3.1 and 3.8 ?

The ECM used with a '94 V-6 will be a bit different.
Can you communicate with the existing ECM? If you can retrieve the data from the ECM it should provide clues about the problems.

I'm not sure the local French service bays will have the equipment for this model. Personally I'm pretty hopeless and have none of the right stuff for testing. Elsewhere on this site I have noted that revving can be caused by air being drawn into the system and I imagine that can be verified without special aids. Thanks for your reply anyway.

Any vacuum or intake leak can cause engine revving. The stored error codes should provide a clue.
What does the data link connector look like? There are two possible versions for '94 in North America. If yours looks like this you can retrieve codes without any special equipment:

If your connector looks like this you will need a special interface:
