BTTF Time Machine

This kit was purchased about a year ago to build with my grandson and was intended to be a "one day build". That turned into a 4 or 5 day build.

Despite it being a snap kit, it's quite horrible and difficult for a kid to put together. The flash on all of the parts was ridiculous.

The best part of the kit is the plated body. When it came time to paint the head and tail light surrounds we(I) accidentally got overspray on the front hood (Dulpi-Color automotive paint). After removing it with thinner, I thought the kit was pretty much toast as it also removed the dullcoat applied by Polar Lights. However, I sprayed the hood with a light coat of Krylon's matte finish and it was good as new.

I showed him how to add clear UV curing resin to the plated headlights to give them some dimension, make decals and transparencies for all the missing gauges and such (none are in the kit). The tail lights were horrible chromed pieces. We removed all the ribbed lines keeping only the outer bezels, painted them black and added more foil-backed transparencies for the actual tail lights. Side mirror faces were made with mylar.

We replaced the kit's hook with a scratchbuilt piece. We then painted/weathered the back reactor section and leveled off the flux capacitor unit with clear resin to replicate the glass cover. The coils along the front, top and sides were sprayed with aluminum plate metalizer, dull coated. The inside of these were gone over with a pencil and polished with a Q-Tip.

The base is a 1/18th scale case with the bottom cut out (so the hook would clear the clear cover). We cut new sections out of PVC foam board to replicate the street and sidewalk. The MPH sign and mailbox are all scratchbuilt with appropriate decals added. The manhole cover is a lense from an LED flashlight.

Even with all of the it's faults we had a blast building it.
