what type of engine?

hey, i was just curious what type of engine you guys think i should use for my car, its a 1967 mustang coupe, i'm doing a restortion on it and i'm not sure type of engine to use, i don't care about emissions, sound laws, gas mileage, insurance, ect ect... so just post what you think
btw, i have a 289(v-8, to whom may not know) right now, but i've been thinking of getting some size of a FE and boring and stroking it to a 427 or a 428, but the parts are expensive and hard to find, so i was also thinking of going for a 385B, and boring and stroking it out to a 514 or so, anyway, post what you think, thanks

Why not an 03 Cobra engine/Tranny? What better way to spend $12-14k?

well lets see:
1. not exactly in the area of the big blocks
2. i hate computer stuff
3. i make 6.15 an hour

Was an idea  Id say a stroked 302 could do the job and be a little on the cheap side, no?

I'd stroke a 351w. Lots of hp and torque like a big block but less wieght and cheaper parts

Just use the 289 and throw some decent parts at it. It'll rev like crazy, and it'll definately make enough power to get out of it's own way.

hehe, true, it was an idea... well i would use a small block but the cars that i'm goin against here arn't exactly 'childs play' (not saying small blocks are childs play, but big blocks get more hp per part)

Moneywise they get close to double for big block parts also

I'll agreewith Unit the 289 is a nice motor with room to improve. and don't be dissing small blocks cause mines only 91ci :headshake

yea, well i've desided what im gonna do it take the 289 (which is actully a 302 block, i guess the block craked or somthing) and bore ti out .30 or MAYBE .60 and put a 351 crank in it, then it will be a 358, or a 363, or somthing like that, just that i can't afford the engine i want right now, nor insurance, i'll just see how many ponys i can rip out of this little beast

A 289 is very different from a 302 block. You def arent gonna just drop a 351W crank in 1.

I don't think boring .60 over on a 302 block is smart. The walls will be a lot thiner which would scare me if it were making decent amounts of HP. Why not just put in a 351 and save yourself the time and money of trying to make one out of a 302?

My vote is with HiFlow5.0. Get the 351, and put some performance parts on it, it just doesn't seem safe with the .60 bore over on the 302.If you do that, you just never know when that engine might give you a kick in the nuts, like this guy. :nutkick:

uhh, yea, i wasn't actully planning to go.60 over, but you guys are awhere that all small blocks are the same physical sizes, a 351 crank could fit into anything(sbf), and the only diffrence between a 289 and a 302 is that a 289's bore is 4.005, and the 302 is 4.004... 1/1000th of an inch

If you want to go with a FE, the parts are out there. You just have to look (which is half the fun). I found a set of 406 heads on Ebay for about $150. They are some good engines if you build them right.

What gave you the impression the 351 and 302 shared the same size block?

They don't. The 351 has a 1/2" taller deck height, and it uses much larger main bearings. Bottom line is the 351 crank isn't about to fit into a 302 block.

It's also important to note the year of the 302 block. The 302 HO blocks from 1985-1995 in the Mustang GT have a hydraulic roller lifter camshaft and different sized lifer bores (taller) to accomodate the roller cam. It's a popular retro-fit, and it would definately be an advantage to have one.

The quickest way to make power on the small block is to go with forced induction. A SC Trim vortech kit with a MAF equipped 5.0HO would be an easy way to get big block power with the small block. Granted you're not going to have stump pulling torque off the line, but you'll probably have traction issues with decent gearing anyway.

uh dude, my stuff isn't form the 80's, try the 60's, and it won't matter to much about the deck hight and the main bearings because i'll but have to fit them in to, but i see where your coming from, and maybe your right, i'll have to cheack with some people

You def need to read more and ask some1 who knows. Stock 302 Crank has a 3.00 stroke a 351W stock crank has a 3.5 stroke. Why does this matter?
Well think about this.... A 347 crank has a stroke of only 3.4 and the block needs to be notched at the bottom for clearance of the rods. With a 3.5 Stroke your going to need even more taken out to the point of serious integrity issues. Also you can make the largrer crank journals work but a 302 block already has a weak main webbing. Doing that would make it even weaker, not smart.

well my engine is older so they say it should fit, but if it doesn't then all it would probably need is a big of grinding around the block, i dunno i'll have to check it out.

It doesn't matter whether you're talking 1968 or 1995 with the 302 (5.0)or 351. The main journals are the same size.

It would be possible to grind the 351C crank down to fit by taking nearly 1/2" of crank off because it's main journals are only 2.749", but not the 351W.

How do you intend on making the main journals on a 351W crank (3.00") fit into a 302 block designed for 2.25" main journals? Grinding off 3/4 of an inch on the 351W crank would leave it almost strong enough to make 100hp. Unless you're seriously suggesting taking 3/4 of an inch out of the 302 block, lol.

i mean grinding a bit out of the block, not the crank you shuld never touch a crank, theres a reason why the counter weight is that big... but i think i can get it to work

So your gonna grind 3/4" out of the main caps???? :bloated:

I'm going to throw a 351W crank in a 302 block was much funnier IMO

An interesting thread you guys have going here!

What's a good online source to find out about the evolution of For'd
V-8s? I've always believed that the only difference between a 302 and a 289 is the crank---a 289 has a 2.87" stroke and the 302 has a 3.00" stroke. Is there a difference in the blocks? Someone recently told me also that the 351 Windsor uses one block, while the 351 Cleveland uses another...an FE block, no less. Is this true? I had always believed that the heads were the main difference.

Is there a good website that gives the answers?

Yes the 351W, 351C, and the 351M (cleveland based motor) all use different blocks

rerun......kid,

Where ever you got your information on a 351w crank and a 302 block is dead wrong.

These guys are trying to set you straight, listen to them, they are telling you the truth. Let me repeat, LISTEN.

Don't listen to the person that is giving you bogus information.

yea. your right, sorry about not listening guys, just a bad time right now... and i was just tired of being told i was wrong and stuff like that..
but i do apprishate the help, i would have wasted a lot of frigen money on stuff that doesn't fit right

but right now i think i'm gonan try and find a 351C engine(4V), i probley won't be able to find one, but if i do i'll use that and if i don't i might get a 351W, or try to use this 289... anyone got advise on this?
