98 Ford Escort Wagon SE 2.0L - Potential Problems?

I recently purchased a 98 Ford Escort Wagon with 88k miles in great condition. Gave it a tune-up and replaced all the filters and PCV, a Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 oil change, Radiator Flush, and Transmission Service.
Now I am aware that the 2.0L is known for running coarse, and for vibrations.
I came across an article the other day discussing the infamous dropped valve problem that these engines are known for experiencing.
The article implies that every 2.0L 4 cyl SOHC will experience this problem at some point. Isn't it possible that out of the many 2.0L SOHC 4cyl that Ford manufactured, that some will NOT experience this problem? CarComplaints.com btw did not list many complaints for this issue
regarding the 1998 model year. Seemed like 97 and 99 had more.
As I researched further, references were made that the problem was due to overheating the engine. Doesn't this basically mean that the person did not pay attention to his temp guage or just did not perform the routine maintenance of the cooling system?
After reading about the DV issue, I feel I made a mistake buying the car so I do not want to over react. The car for me is economical, and I get good gas mileage, and save at the gas pump.
One more thing, for the last few days, when I start the car cold from sitting overnight, and the idle begins to stabilize, I am starting to hear what sounds like a tapping coming from the right side of the engine looking from inside the car. It only lasts for a few seconds, and then disappears. The sound only appears when the car sits overnight upon a cold start, and not when I accelerate or sit idling at a light or restart the car later during the day. Could this be due to the oil or oil filter not providing enough lubricity upon startup?
Again, do not want to over react but seeking clarification to understand the engine better. Thanks.
