2009 Mariner Sync Issue

My sister bought a 2009 Mariner with the basic non navigation system. She is having issues getting the sync to turn on. This is a second owner and we aren't even sure if the previous owner ever sync'd the vehicle. Do anyone have experience with this? Any help is appreciated.
We can't perform a master reset because the sync won't come on at all.
I am going to try to disconnect the battery tomorrow for 15 minutes to force a reset, we were told that might work.
We were also told it might need an update. But we can't update it because the USB won't activate because the sync won't come on.
When you push "phone" nothing happens. When you push "AUX" nothing happens with sync.
When you push "MENU" all you get is presets for the radio.
