Im thinking of getting rims that are 17'' 7'' and I want to know what is the biggest tire I can put on them. A guy from Discount tire said 215/40/17 is the biggest... the 215 part is what im worried about. I want to know if I can put 225/40/17 on there. Has any of you done this. Let me know.

You CAN put 225 on 17x7 but you have to run lower tire pressure because the tire will be pulled in at the bead.

215/40's and 225/40's will have a different rolling diameter, meaning that your speedo will be a little bit out. If I were you, I'd try a variety of tyre shops and see what they all say. I'd look up a conversion chart for you, but I don't have one close by, sorry.
Another idea, would be to find someone you know with 225/40 17's and test fit them onto your car to check the clearance.
