Hi everyone, this is my first time posting here and figure I'd jump off the deep end. I've recently picked up scale modeling after about a 30 year hiatus and this is my third build. Now that I'm 30 years old then my kit when I was 10 or so I've been able to buy things other then the Testors stuff locally and have an airbrush and all types of wonderful paints. Enough with the intro lets get on with it.

Kunny`z JZX100 Chaser kit from Aoshima #003701

http://www.1999.co.jp/itbig18/10182974p.jpg

First I had to glue on the body kit. I like to do it now as I can paint the whole body at once.

For the rear bumper I decided to try something new and I drilled out and remove the lower middle of the bumper. Then i removed the lip at the top to make it flush. The rotary tool made quick work at removing the material then applied and sanded some putty a few times to make it flush.

Spoiler assembled and primed. Used Zero Paints primer on this build.

The whole car primed. This was the first time using my new air brush and the primer went on a bit thick, it did not want to go into the seams... All worked out ok though.

For a base coat I went with a nail polish colour, KleanColour #78 Angel Red. Was not sure about the colour while I was thinning it. It has a real fine flake almost like a pearl, kinda made it look a lighter shade. For this nail polish I had to thin it about 3:1 so I was able to spray it. Looks pretty good on the body. Went on pretty well, a little bit of orange peal.

Added some decals.

Clear coat. Darkened it up quite a bit, I think it looks much better now. Still getting used to my new air brush so there is some orange peal to deal with after it cures.

That's it for now. I'm not the fastest builder and real life always seems to get in the way, can't paint when my kid is around... I'll try to keep my posts updated once I have more pics. Thanks for looking and if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

Looking good! I've always wanted to try painting with nail polish but haven't gotten around to it yet. Looks like the filter is missing off your spray booth, hope your wearing a mask 😂 keep up the good work!

Ya I removed the filter from my booth, I found I was not getting enough air flow. I also have the exhaust piped out the window. I don't have a dedicated modeling room, I have my stuff setup in my basement entertainment room. I needed the extra air flow to try to keep and fumes and over spray to a minimum. I for sure where a respirator, I want to live a long life to keep on modeling. Still kind of scared to shoot a 2k clear, I hear that stuff is nasty.

Nail polish is lacquer based so that's easy to thin and spray. Nice thing is they come in all the colors you ever want that don't come in other paint sets. I have some that color change and what not. Feels a bit weird browsing ebay/amazon for it though, make sure I don't do it at work...

On to today's update. A couple of hours with 3200 grit sand paper to remove all the orange peal.

PS. last images were a bit small and this time I used I didn't use MS Paint to resize them :)

Good to hear. My workshop is in a concrete garage so I cannot vent. I have it going through 2 carbon filters. Seems to work ok. Plus I wear a mask. Keep up the good work

Nice start, how many bottles of nail polish do you need to paint one model?

Nice start, how many bottles of nail polish do you need to paint one model?

The bottles are 15ml. I thin it quite a bit as I find them really thick out of the bottle. I usually do somewhere between 2:1 and 3:1, and I use Mr Color leveling thinner to try to get the paint to level out once spayed. I also use some cheap lacquer thinner as the mr hobby stuff is hard to get here in Canada. I bought some 50ml eye dropper bottles from ebay and use those for my mix. Easy to just squirt some into the air brush cup. So I guess I get about 40ml of paint and I shoot 3-4 coats depending on the color and coverage. I also spray one real heavy coat on the underside plate of the car. I try to leave 5-10ml paint left over just in case I need to fix things up or miss something. The nail paint I'm using is Kleancolor and its about $1 a bottle still real cheap even if you need 2.

And more update. Sanding is the worst part of this whole thing. After it's all done it is worth it.

Now with 4000 grit, getting ready for the polish.

Yeah sanding can be a pain, but also therapeutic.

I used to use eye droppers from old medicine bottles. Now I buy disposable pipettes to measure out my paint. I also pre mix my paints and store in Tamiya paint jars.

Been a while since my last update but as we all know life gets in the way of our hobby at times. Nothing like a 5 year old and summer to eat up most of my free time.

Just an image of some of my work space, showing how my booth vents right out the window.

Painted the under side with the same paint as the body. Didn't use any primer and I'll pay for it later...

Parts cleaned up and ready for some silver paints.

Things painted with flat black. I taped off the wheel wells and painted those black, once I removed the tape it peeled off some of the red paint, should have used primer, this nail polish is not very sticky. Guess I'll have to find a way to integrate it into some time of weathering.

Comes with a racing seat and figure I'd drill out the seat belt holes.

Update time, the end is close!

The racing seat completed with drilled out seat belt holes and painted in a two tone.

The interior done. Painted as the instructions called for.

The kit comes with a little sheet of chrome sticker. I figure I'd give it a try but it was plastic and would not keep it's shape on the sharp bends.

http://i.imgur.com/QTSRnC5.jpg

Better with bare metal foil along with the things painted with some flat black, witch is a bit hard to see in the pic.

http://i.imgur.com/GnJJd7K.jpg

Now for some smaller details. I used Tamiya clear red for the break lens but next time I think I'll add a little smoke to it to make it a bit darker.

http://i.imgur.com/A1zh0zA.jpg

Front grill masked and painted in flat black, after this I did add the decal to it.

http://i.imgur.com/Cd6KlvL.jpg

The breaks I painted yellow to just to be different. As for the rims I stripped them of the chrome. The color was a mix of 2:1 of gold and gloss black, came out pretty good.

Only real big thing since last update was masking and paining the trim around the inside of the windows, no picture of that...

After a few days of assembly finally have it all together! Being pretty new at this still I learned some lessons for the next model. The big ones are to use primer on more things as some of the paint I used pealed off some parts and had to paint it again. Also for the next one I need to work on the polishing of the clear coat. I'm not 100% happy how it turned out, there are still lots of little scratches from polishing it. Over all I'm happy how it turned out and on to the next one.

I'll create a post in the completed forum once I blow the dust off my real camera.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to read my WIP post.
