Gear shift boot

I have a Toyota Tacoma manual shift. The boot is in good shape but it will not stay in place. The wire ring and the clips on the console are in good shape but when I clip it back in place it comes unclipped as soon as I shift a couple of times. Any suggestions?

See if the groove the clip sits in is full of dirt or something preventing it from seating.
