Axle Fluid Power Steering Contamination

Back a year or so ago, the rear axle fluid leaked (rapidly, I think) and covered the brakes and wheels of my 2005 E-150.

The repair shop told me that the rear brake and wheel system had to be replaced.

They replaced rear wheel bearing, rear wheel seal, brake shoes, lining, brake pads, brake rotor etc.

I am not doubting these things needed replacement, however, they also flushed the power steering fluid and did a VPS Service Kit.

Can rear axle fluid contaminate power steering fluid.

No, the rear axle grease can't get into the power steering. But the power steering fluid can go bad with time and need to be replaced. I know on my 2005 Expedition the power steering fluid had turned black and I did a flush myself to get the old stuff out and put in new last year. It might have needed to be done for your van, but they should have asked first.
