that sucks and the logic behind it is pretty damn weak. personally i think the money would be better spent improving our crappy roads

This would, in effect, ban imports of pre-1994 used cars from Japan because they would not meet the standards.

Bye-bye R32 :(

I think thats pretty weak. You may as well just toughen up the safety standards on imported cars of any age. Im sure Skylines would be fine - its just the 1985 turbo Daihatsu Charades and what-have-you you have to get rid of. Of course better driving training would be a superior option all round if you axe me.

Besides I was under the impression that imports had raised the standards of vehicles on our roads over the last decade or so - my Dad was telling me it wasn't so long ago (to him) that heaters were an added option on some cars! (Talkin fords and the like).

Once again the government doesn't know what its doing. Shit, ban older imports, but I am still alowd to drive my old RX-7.
Why doesn't the government look at what realy causes deaths on our roads? No I don't mean speed, they got that all wrong too. But our goat tracks we have for roads and the basicly crappy driving ability of a high percentage of road users, not to mension the arrogance of the average NZ driver. Better roads, better driver training and this could be avoided I think.
If they spent more money on our roads, there would be less deaths, there for less money spent on burying them and ACC etc. This would equate to more money in the acconomy (or more like more money for perks gor the polititions). It would also mean they wouldn't have to ban older imports, therefore more money in the acconomy. But because of the 'more money' thing, the government don't won't to realy save lives as they couldn't use road deaths as an excuse to fine people heaps for speeding. This is evedent in the fact that smoking kills a shit load more people a year than driving, and more ACC and health related costs, but they are in no hurry to ban smoking are they? And it could be done.
If someone wants to smoke its their buisness, but in general it pisses off most non smokers. But, smoking is very big money to the government.
The big problem for us is, no early GTR's, No early EVO's (although there are plenty here already), no more early Bats etcetcetc.

yeah, we know. Damn stupid. Unfortunately, it seems that the real factors important in road crashes and deaths, are in that strange "too sensible" basket - not to mention the "too hard" basket. The things others have said (road quality, and driver education) would sort out the majority of the problem very effectively. But it's not as easy as plonking a speed camera on the side of the road, nor as lucrative.
