If the airbag light is on, there will be a diagnostic code set. Maybe the place trying to pull the code does not have a scan tool capable of accessing the ABS system. You should find a friend or shop that does. Without that insight, you'll be guessing and likely throwing away money.
A few quick things to check though would be the wiring under the seats and for the seat belts. With the shop playing around with the car recently, the driver's seat may have been run forward and backward a few times and stressed/broke the wires for the airbag system under the seat.
