Hi peoples, can anyone tell me what the signs are when the turbo is on the way out.Im getting a high pitch sucking/scrapping noise under boost. Sounds a bit like running with no air cleaner at wot. It has just started doing this .

cheers for any help.........

sounds like it may be the turbo... i think u can disable the turbo like leave the w/g open or something and see if it is less. anyone else?

leaving the wastegate open will only allow lower boost..
It isn't a big job to pull the turbo off and check it to make sure it is all ok..

I had a really high pitched squeal coming from my turbo and upon inspection i found that the gasket from the exhaust manifold to turbine inlet was blown. These are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace, the gasket is identical to a nissan patrol turbo gasket, it cost me around AUS$30. Try that.:bandit:

Hey thanks guys, im going to pull it out this weekend . To me it sounds a bit like the bearings have gone in it. Just done an 800km trip in it and the noise hasnt got any worse and still running 12 psi so cant be too bad. I hope...........

cheers........

well it was the AFM pipe to the turbo. The hose clip on the turbo end was lose. All fixed now,no need for a new turbo just yet.:D :D :D

it's not that hard, 2 sets of hands and a full day's work are needed but. me and my dad pulled off the turbo and rebuilt it in about 5 hours. But my dad's an ex hot rodder and he used to build his own cars, so he's pretty good with a motor.

You pretty much need to remove all the intake piping (ex intercooler) unbolt the turbo from the dump pipe (which can be a cock sometimes) make sure you have plenty of spare bolts and shit, cos the metallurgy of them means they break pretty easily under a bit of torque. then you have to disconnect the 3 feed pipes and plug them with a rag. make sure you dont lose the special hollow bolts that let the oil and water thru. then you can unbolt the turbo from the exhaust flange.

Once the turbo is off it's pretty simple to pull apart and check. just do the usual checks for turbine & compressor damage, and check the shaft for axial play. there should be a little bit of play to compensate for movement, but only minimal. i couldn't tell you the exact amount of play.

then replacing is the exact opposite of removing.
