vocho...
VW doesn't have a 2.0 liter, turbocharged V6.
If you have a 1998 Passat purchased in the United States, you have one of the two following engines in your car:
1.8Liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder, 150HP
2.8Liter 30 valve V6, non turbo, 190HP
Those are the only two engines that have been offered on the 1997 1/2-2001 1/2 B5 Passat. The previous generation Passat with the different bodystyle used to offer a 2.0 4-cylinder engine as the base engine...it was not turbocharged. On any VW site, if you list "2.0", the only engine that fits the bill is that engine, still in use as a base engine on current Jettas and Golfs.
You may want to take a quick look under the hood and determine which one you have (it is usually written right on the plastic engine cover). But certainly get rid of the 2.0 or the V6 in your avatar...one of them is wrong!
As for the deal...$7,000 would be a good price for the GLS V6, and a fair-to-decent deal on the 1.8T. It depends on what type of equipment you have. Automatic or manual tranny? AC or climate control? Cloth or leather? Sunroof? etc.
I would agree with clubb5 being the best source for information about these cars and how to modify them. But I will warn you - get a better understanding of your car and its engine and equipment, because alot of the people on that site are very knowledgeable and sometimes a bit sarcastic. If you go in and post something about a 2.0 turbo V6, you will be flamed to death, and likely not get the answers you were looking for.
Yes, you can order an owners manual from VW directly...go onto their website for the phone numbers - www.vw.com.
Enjoy your Passat...I am on my second one, and had a wonderful experience so far over the past 5 years with both of them. There are lots of nice appearance and suspension mods to do to personalize your car, and if you have the 1.8T engine, you can get a bunch of extra horsepower out of it for not much money.
Good luck!
