96 Skylark - Crank No Start

Hello!

Having start issues with 1996 Skylark. Car cranks but doesn't start. Determined initially that there is no spark by hooking spark tester to plug - no light.

Tried spraying ether in air intake - no start - which confirmed again no spark.

Determined that there is no power at ignition control module by testing power connection at icm which showed 0 volts. Also tested fuse - which showed 0 volts.

There are several other fuses in the block that show 0 volts with the key in "on" position.

Noted through all of this that dash check engine light was not coming on at start.
Replaced ecm hoping it was the problem to no avail - although with the new em the check engine light comes on now at start.

Since there is no power at several fuses, wondering if fuse block needs replaced.

Any help, advice would be appreciated.

Erik

Uhmm- Ignition switch comes to mind-- Check big pink wire under dash with ignition on--

I agree brcidd, if there is no power to several fuses with the key in the on position, likely culprit is the ignition switch.....

That pink wire out of the ign switch, he is talking about, feeds these fuses:turn, cruise, airbag, PCM, alarm, ERLS, Ign Module, and fuel injector fuse......so if all these fuses don't have power, you can just about bet that it's the ignition switch....

okay - thank you. I'll look at it and try to find the wire. Not a great mechanic. The wire you are talking about would be coming from the steering column?

Yes, in a bundle with red, red/white, yellow, white, brown, orange- all are "big" wires- carry lots of amps to and from ignition switch- check the reds, both should be battery hot, and the pink (primary ignition) and white should be hot only when ignition is on, brown is the accessory wire- radio and wipers....

Found the bundle you are talking about connected to ignition switch left side of column. Found 0 volts on the pink one. will let you know outcome. thanks for the help

Well I replaced the ignition switch - started right up. Thanks for the help.

I noticed that the fuses that were not getting power - ign mod; fuel pump; fuel injectors; - actually don't get power unless the car is running.

Anyway - it's fixed. Thanks
