Tamiya Porsche 962C Long Tail - Lets talk about it..

ok, as said before in the general topics I was searching some info about the porsche 962 long tail.
This cause I have the intention to build up a rothmans car, possibly the car. no 17 Le mans winner 1987, to place beside the porsche 961 wide body that is giving me now more than an headache right now (avoid museum collection decals guys...really)...

So I started looking around to what it could be the best 962 around. I like a lot this prototype C group car, and was sure to find a clear information around theme.
It is indeed quite messy, probably cause in the 80s and early 90s too many of theme were racing so nearly all team made their own cars, ultin the gunnar cars 966.
My first intention was to operate over the haegawa 962, both cause was apparently more detailed than the slot based tamiya and second cause I have a big pile of theme waiting on my stash.
After looking around anyway I noted too many parts were imho not so convincing in the hasegawa bodyshape. Mostly the bubble area around the windshield has something mistaken in the line.
It is also true that well build models have a nice look when completed and painted well. Basically I suspect hasegawa made many many boxes of the 962 in her c group serie changing mostly wheels and other details, but that body has really something unclear in the front area.

I then did it my way, simply taking the pics of the year car I wanna build and looking at what I have in my hands. On the stash there was also amisterious shell 962 tamiya, so checking what I have I discover the following...

1. there is no 962 long tail available (but there are tons of decals for long tails car around)
2. all revell kits are hasegawa reboxed with costantly mistaken decals. The orange jägermeister should be a 956 short tail, and the rothmans box should be..a nearly correct 962 kh with no tobacco decals and high portance configurations.

3. I like the le mans car of 1987,mostly for its no.17 number..so simply had to modify the slotbody from tamiya.

ok honestly there is already around the full model kit of this car, and is made by Hiro in 1/24.
Despite the high price of the kit it has some features that I dont like, first of all the trasparent parts are messy and tricky to fit, and is very easy to close the model this way...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xVZiijMFE1A/VsNM_zGxf3I/AAAAAAABOZk/cG-ycTZ_SiQ/s640-Ic42/03-06-200919-53-13_0022_resize-1.jpg

with no offense for the builder of this nice model. Such windhsield is horrible to see fitted such way, being the real ones glued perfectly on the body lines of the car..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q89r9kjeckE/VsNFcxjYuoI/AAAAAAABOWA/5kfxa-rYe1U/s720-Ic42/18lm87_1.jpg

and first of all, I dont need a full detail open car, but just want to enjoy the stunning line of this immortal racer from Stuttgard.

As everybody knows this tamiya kit have some nasty and misteryous features that must be fixed. First of all the side intakes have a strange shape (probably done such way for the motorized tamtech body), but the overall shape of the body is imho the best plastic one around.
Also tamiya on this serie has all the trasparent parts moulded alerady on the body. Not so big problem for me, but making colored cars the white plastic on the glued side will remain visible, so try cover it with some internal and external nearby paint can be the only way to hide it.

All the 962 body is done in an uncommon plastic, also here I think coming from the toysh meaning of the original kit..
and then....of course the rear hatch, object of my initial thread searching detailed infos and pics about him (and now we all know more..).
Tamiya made a short tail kurtheck car, with quite ugly details on the wing area too.
Some modelers suggest to take directly the rear hatch from the nicer 956 kit serie, but all the rear lines of the car are different, starting from the curvature of the rear main wheel that in 962 was much bigger.
I had this hatch and used it for measures. In the beginning I thought I could also use the side mountings for the rear wing, but no way, cause the wheel area is correctly higher in 962s than 956s...

narcotized with my speech? lets see some pics then..

This is more or less the car I mean, despite this is the museum mistaken one with larger tail edge from following seasons..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ClpZsWD5S-k/VsNFgGT8_xI/AAAAAAABOWA/LV36C3nYULA/s360-Ic42/2007lmcj_porsche962c_87.jpg

and to make a long story short, the correct 962 tail for car.17 should be this one..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ujj0Z-WUKyg/VsNNRo-pozI/AAAAAAABOZg/9k0BsEwVgZo/s640-Ic42/Immagine047.jpg

and not the one...from porsche ag museum... :nono:

I started cutting away the wingmounts on the body and make it longer with 956 dimensions, correct in 1/24 scale

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PGeUrjiZW7I/VtV0XtMol7I/AAAAAAABPW4/ZBG-DC9G2G4/s512-Ic42/IMG_4532.JPG

here u can see the main difference in 962 from 956. Wheel arch and curvature of the tail is totally different (correctly)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KHXH0-Tpzoc/VtV0Xocqy2I/AAAAAAABPW4/rxLcsSMX72s/s512-Ic42/IMG_4533.JPG

so there is no way to make it as easy drag and drop of parts, simply cutting the hatch on its line.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ynTxIU8f8F8/VtV0XqCU4_I/AAAAAAABPW4/8g6R_kLAkdw/s512-Ic42/IMG_4531.JPG

and another mistake in 962 body is the lateral not narrowed line going to the tail of the car, as correctly done in the more precise 956

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NXtmLeJDRVg/VtV0Xh7FsbI/AAAAAAABPW4/ovzQAreMHF4/s512-Ic42/IMG_4534.JPG

the cutted rear wing must be anyway saved, cause of future...short 956 ! :grinyes:

Btw, the uglyest part of this body is, as said, in the lateral air intakes.
It is really the most important part to modify to make the tamiya 962 to look correct at once without searching for expensive models or work on hasegawa object.
It is not a difficult part to modify, and is enough to follow the 2 inner lines of the door and remove the whatever air intake lookalike they moulded on the part.
To avoid a third extra cut I simply engraved a little more the remaining front panel line of the door, the only correct.
Not so difficult also recreate the triangulars missing areas, even for the filling and sanding of it, I deeply suggest to cover with tape the outer part of the clear parts.
Very good tamiya provide a very precise tape mask in nearly all the recent reboxings of their 962.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dy7eAN1Apco/VtmBT1ri2qI/AAAAAAABPjU/NHMDPluorQA/s512-Ic42/IMG_4583.JPG

On google I also found several parts produced to make even easyer those corrections, surely better than my work, but I think all this is anyway quite easy job to be done by any modeller with a little surgeon skill...:naughty:

Those doors helps if someone willing to make them open..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n6P4r2Sp65A/VtWUZNE4F-I/AAAAAAABPZs/l0dAJaHxFE0/s293-Ic42/962doors.jpg

as well as those parts are probably meant to modify a more detailed 956 to a 962..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kUod6SQi2bE/VsNG2e0FZ-I/AAAAAAABOWU/HedYCv7Q6tk/s640-Ic42/Studio27Porsche962LHtranskit-MF3.jpg

I Dunno the origin of those images (surely inside here someone knows better than me those resin parts cause until few weeks ago I never crossed seriously a 962 dilemma..), but I dont really neither know if they are still available on the market.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hZIy8RQ6w_k/VsNHOC1NjuI/AAAAAAABOWM/JSr_v1u763o/s640-Ic42/comp_962-1.jpg

then of course will be needed to rebuild the inner radiators of the air intake. Here I still dont know if they were identical as in 956 or different in some ways. Here enclosed more actual pics of the part

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WHFJ3VLWPoA/VsO9mrP59bI/AAAAAAABOmU/hDuS28zfwic/s640-Ic42/10376057_10203614392337669_3777160944454899013_n.j pg

maybe not the best source cause from the front carbon fiber this is surely a refurbished modern car..

Finally in this pic u can see why for me hasegawa model isnt so correct. :shakehead
Take a look at the front cockpit area..To me it seems really too high
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c7yP1moKncQ/VtWUVx2f0zI/AAAAAAABPZ0/syGaNRJtnzA/s800-Ic42/17-9.jpg

while real one is soo lower on the roof.. (imho this is the nicest pic of car.17 ever spotted. sooo "operative", soo much "in action.." :grinyes:)

A great info source for 962s is this website, even if mostly for IMSA cars:
https://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/models/962.htm

Note also this guy, at the end of page 3, is restarting the model again using a tamiya body....
https://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/models/962b.htm
......That's how far I came when I decided to start over again! I'm now waiting for inspiration to start the conversion all over again, but now with Tamiya 956 and 962C kits. :runaround:

wanted to save maybe the side panels for rear wing on 956 long tail car, but the curvature around the wheels is different, so rebuild theme in plasticard.

for this model I plan to use the nice looking decals from st27 printed by cartograph. As said before I had a nightmare on my 961 with museum collector decals (done by a drunked designer thinking at something weird in a very cold night probably) out of shape, colors, dimensions, drawn over the slim 961 86 and with mistakes. Must still calm down a little and then will update also that wip I opened time ago..

just made the air vents in side windows, and started apply some grey paint to see body imperfections before pose the main rothmans colors.
Also I made my wheels. As you all know for me they are so cute to do... nearly as candy..:iceslolan

Studio 27 made a longtail conversion kit for the Tamiya 962C model, you can occasionally find it on eBay. I purchased mine a few years ago, it's my review of the kit from where you came across those images:

thanks for the nice link Mike, is always interesting discover new ones.

However think after seen better your pictures, this conversion from studio 27 is not suitable for the 1986/87 official cars, first of all cause they made in resin..the tail of later models/museum car (mistaken for lm race of those years):shakehead

and is rare and priced up to 100 bucks (probably at least) if u lucky to cross one around :runaround:

as well as I still think the old school conversion way to make it curbside is quite easy for nearly all modellers out there :iceslolan

the buildup then comes along quite straight, without majior problems. The only thing I noted was anyway st27 drawn those decals for 87 car, probably over a 956, cause decals have a slightly different size from the real 962 one.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--Xku3T7aoAQ/VuCZq1otHFI/AAAAAAABPyc/-GGIhQdD0lkj8k-wjmdyYG5guixIXtbjgCCo/s512-Ic42/IMG_4655.JPG

the same for red fine writings on the brakes vents, smaller in size as correctly for ...a 956..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_ACew2cffiA/Vt7u9peoRSI/AAAAAAABPvM/FfBF7hIEZlECcgLhXAp6XrEQdp2_qJHbwCCo/s512-Ic42/IMG_4652.JPG

very nice and quality decals as usual btw. Not at all as the terrible ones from Museum Collection I used to try finish the 961.
In that model the decal positioning has been a real nightmare, like very few others I´ve ever had in my modelling career.
Museum colelctin decals, despite the japanese origin (meaning this usually japanese are very precise and quality kids..) is stuff that only can provide a BIG headache. And I will never give up to advise other modellers when I cross shitty stuff that can simply destroy the pleasure of build models, exactly as it happened to me when I finished an italian av-8 harrier with a terrible decal printed by a moderator of a little italian forum...that thanksfully banned me for life in such platform.

So museum collection decals are....out of size, dimensions (drawn over the slimmer 86 car:runaround: ), with mistaken colors, mistaken and missing decals, out of center writings, very easy to break up when also just little curved. And in 961 there are ONLY curves on the body, so had to repaint them all by hands, trying to match the colors..
Also true around there are no models for that 961...but jesus, at lest print it decently can be possible.:frown: . Nor the last decal coming from slot cars has this ugly quality.
Swiss driver Claude Haldi become a swedish pilot with our flag :screwy:, and over the main rothmans color stripe on the roof......I had a black hair printed inside..... :runaround:
I really HOPE I can close her, is the only thing I desire now honestly....thanks god is an unique conversion with no copies around, cause suspect could be nearly impossible to complete it without getting mad.

back on the 962, the moulded parts didnt give majior problems. The white plastic sides remain quite hided from the curvature of the lights.
Looking pics I also suspect for those low portance configurations, porsche changed a little bit also the front clip, cause it seems to me the nose has a slightly different shape (look at lights cover here..)

as well as is mistaken the instruction of some decals plates from st27 sheet (as the C group plate on the roof).
Convert this 962 into le mans car, curbside model, was very easy btw. Any modeller can absolutely do it without majior problems in the build up.
