anything is possible with cash...

i would say the..rb26dett because the engine bay will be less cramped as opposed to the vq30dett.. and i like the whole inline 6 thing... i say go rb!!

and weight distrubution will be better and more evenly distrubuted with the rb then the vq..

my $0.02

Dude I just got a good job (meaing 9 to 5, 7.50 an hour) I"m 18, living with my parents (Yea I"m cool) and making almost 200 a week. So i can save or take a lone out for some money. Plus i got friends that has connections to get a cheap RB. He also done rb26dett swaps before and says it's a LOT of fabrication, but in the end it's more than worth it. so w/e. I"ll get the engine with a loan form the bank, and build it up when i get another job (that's right kiddies 2 jobs at one time) Working at one of these damn indian casinos making 12 an hour. Yea I have it al planned out lol. Too bad i know nothing is gonna go to plan loll

ok..........

im lost now...:confused:

didnt you ask which would you rather have in a 240? and don't tell me wether it's possible or not. what is the deal with the whole big explaination?:confused: ok i have a job also and im also 17 and i also make 7.50 and work 9-5, it sounds easy on paper to do a swap but when you come down to it itz not.. i understand that you will have two jobs and good for you but it will take a while to save and it get complicated you get bills you dont need and expencises you didnt have before because you now have a job. when i first got my job i was like im gona save 4g' for a sr20det swap and i did it on paper and it worked but when it came to doing it, it didnt work i only was able to save 2500 out of the 4g's which isnt to bad but not to good as well.. not meaning to put you down or nuthin i hope you do get your swap but your new here as time goes by you will unedrstand things are easily said then done what you plan for is never what you get when it comes to a car... give it time.. no i have gave up on a 240sx with a sr20det i would rather spend the money on a ka24de and making into a ka24de-t quicker e.t.'s then the sr20det.. now i have gone a completely different route im want a eclipse gsx because i will be running faster then the sr20det\ka24det 240 in a shorter peroid of time.. yes i know i went way off topic:tongue: sorrie :wink:

good luck

Err, today must be opposite day.

The RB is roughly twice as long as the VQ, and would take up more space in the engine bay. Weight distribution would be worse(or more difficult to improve) with the RB, because more of the engine would be past the front axle.

This is the reason that tuners like Top Secret are swapping VQs into R34 GT-Rs. The VQ is short enough that the entire engine can be placed behind the front axle, effectively making the GT-R a 'Front Midship' car. The weight distribution(and overall weight) is much better, and greatly improves the car's handling.

u may got me on weight distrubution but the space problem i think the rb will leave more space in there.. it jus that the vq is wide so i figured it would be more weight in the front also the same logic gose for the space issue..

id want the RB motor... it isnt that much heavier than the KA, my friends car weighs 2700 with the RB26, like 50 lb heavier than with the KA, the RB26 sounds better too.. when he's on it next to travis with his 300, the inline 6 sounds sicker,,, the 300 is at 14# and the 240 is at 17# tho... but the rb still sounds sicker when he puts it at stock 11#

RalphCare

VQ is wider cause its two rows of 3 cylinders
RB is longer cause its one row of 6 cylinders..
so its either 1 or the other, its down to how much u wanna spend on fab, and how much u really care about the weight.

in my opinion i'd go with an RB just cause its done more often.

and i always thought the VQ was 35DE
and the VG is 30DETT.

VG is from 90 - 96 Z
and VQ is from 350z..

whole different ball game, cause of how new those VQ's are aswell.

its totally down to how deep ur wallet is, and personally id stick with an SR instead of all these cause u guys in the U.S get raped in taxes for having ur own money in the bank.

the RB26DETT is a better motor then the VG30DETT because from the nature of a straight 6 is that you get massive torque compared to a V6's. the RB is also more rev happier and its a much more robust engine. it can handle over 600hp on a stock bottom end. it also have 6 throttle bodys. the RB is just a better motor.

I would also agree, that the RB is the better of the two engines, but a question, why not the SR, or if you want a 6, the RB25? If you're building this car for street use (with the track day thrown in here and there), it seems a lot more practical to go with the SR because you can pump out high hp numbers regardless of which of these engines you choose, and for a lot less money, defintely enough hp for the street, at least...

well ill be damned.. i never knew rb26 had ITB

thats like one of the few things i didnt know.. ( i imagine there are tons more, but i mean general stuff)

ITS ABOUT HALF THE PRICE OF A SR20. JUST AS EASY TO INSTALL, AND YOU CAN STROK IT TO ABOUT 2.5L WITH MORE OUTPUT THAN A RB25.

out of those 2 choices, i'd go RB26, and my reasons are the same as everyone elses. :bigthumb:

my only point is that with the money you would be spending on an RB26DETT swap, you could easily buy an SR and build it up enough to more then better the performance of the RB26. just something to think about...cause if you think SR redtop swap = 4g's and RB swap = 10g's at LEAST, then after the SR swap, you'd have 6g's with which to build up the engine. 6g's can do ALOT.

The VQ family has been around since 1995(if not earlier). There are several variants.
VQ20DE=168hp
VQ25DE=187hp
VQ25DET='276hp'
VQ30DE=190-227hp
VQ30DET='276hp'(probably well over 300hp)

You can get VQs for much cheaper than an RB as well. I've seen the VQ30DETs go for under $1k. The VQ30DET makes plenty of power, too. You see, the Japanese-market Cedric/Gloria twins use this motor, and give up little if any performance away to the 345hp Infiniti M45.

Dude a 240sx RB26DETT engine swap is actually not that difficult since the subframe is pretty much the same among all nissans. There is some sort of dissinformation going on between 240sx owners. The RB25DETT swap is not so hard. In fact any of the RB series swaps are not so hard. I had it done myself not more then 3 months ago to my 96 240sx. Ohh and by the way im from CT now living in AZ, you got any pictures of that skyline, I think it might be my friends dad, he said he was gona get one last year, haven't talked to them since :cool:

I hope your not trying to say that rwd and awd have the same subframes. The rb26dett is set up awd (mounts, crossmember, tranny, and a transfer case oil pan oh yeah and the subframe) and the 240 is setup for rwd which makes everything NOT bolt right up. Then if you get that sorted out there's always the steering column fab needed to clear the turbos.

engines that can take more max HP are better for MAXING OUT ur engine, if u dont wanna MAX it out, u can go with an engine that has good response with like Stage 2 mods only. the better engine is the engine which is good for what u WANT ur car to do.

actually I didnt say they were the same, i said their pretty much the same their is a difference, and yes it is a little more difficult to do but not by that much. and its even easier if you stick with the rwd you dant have to get awd

Sr20 (red) = 2000-3500 --- rb26 = 5500-7500
-------------------------- rb25 tranny = 800-1000
Install = 500-1000----------install = 2000-3000
-------------------------------------------------------------------
2500-4500 ----------------8300-11500

Huge cost difference, so even if you're working a lot of hours you are making shit for money. With how much the SR swap costs even it would take you many months pay if you saved it all...which I'm sure you spend some of it. CA, SR, or RB25 are good swaps...don't stray away unless you are a very good mechanic OR you got a huge cash flow. Fixing and upgrading parts on an I6 or V6 will cost more than a 4 since many parts instead of buying multiples of 4, you have to buy multiples of 6.

Don't even get me started about a VQ swap while you're making 200 a week...even with 2 jobs you will be making under 2000 a month. Imagine getting into an accident that totals your car and then you're out a 10,000 dollar or more engine swap...and the insurance company will give you only a few thousand for the value of the car since most (none, besides progressive) cover aftermarket mods.

And I wish people would stop posting engine swap threads until new developments occur...aka someone successfully completes a v6 swap and documents it. It's fine to talk about this stuff, but it seems all people want to discuss is engine swaps.

Nobody turn this into a flame war like the last one damnit.

Id go with the VQ over the RB just because ive seen the RB done (its about to be done alot more too). Pretty much the same reason i dont like domestics - they can Rape most imports in terms of power but they do it with 2-3 times the displacement and they've been doing it since the 70s so its not that intresting to me.

And I havent really seen any tuners trying to make big numbers with the VQs (well at least before the 350z) and the RB series is a good 8yrs older than the VQ platform (from VQuick's '95 number) so i belive we have yet to see the full potential of what the VQ is capible of

as for in a 240 not only would the weight distribution be better it would leave more room up front for V-mount intercoolers and stuff like that

P.S. I dont doubt the awsome-ness of the RB (and anyone who does should have their fingers smashed with a hammer) but i think the VQ will end up being superior once it has some years of tuning on it.

The other thing I didn't mention about the VQ is the balance it will provide for an S-chassis car. For those who want a very well rounded 240SX that can be a giant killer at the strip, roadcourse, or the street, the VQ is probably one of the best choices. You've got good weight distribution, low weight, and good, useable power.

The VQ weighs less than most, if not all, of the other Nissan motor swaps that have been done. At only 108lbs, the VQ weighs less than many 4 bangers, including the SR(probably).
VQs are also cheap and plentiful, if you know where to look. It's not like anyone else is really using them for anything, so they should be easy to find. I mentioned in another thread that fwd 95-up Maxima VQs(as low as $400) will bolt up to the '01+ Pathfinder or 350Z transmissions. A VQ motor and tranny can probably be had for less than some SR longblocks.
A VQ motor is also quite torquey, even in stock form. With a Stillen supercharger or some of the turbo kits available, internally stock VQ30s are making well over 400fwhp in Maximas. On top of that, you can always go NA.

Basically, a VQ is very light, can be very cheap, and can be very powerful. A 240SX with a VQ swap will be the same way.:iceslolan

I think you may have misread that. The article says is weighs 108lbs LESS than the engine it replaced. Here's the article (http://subscribers.wardsauto.com/microsites/Newsarticle.asp?newsarticleid=2666859&srid=10088&instanceid=29125&pageid=5991&magazineid=1004&siteid=26)

I'd go with the RB simply due to the fact that it is a more respected motor (couldn't think of anything else to say that it has a better background than the VQ)

The Rb has tons of aftermarket support in japan, granted the VQ is becoming more popular, the RB is still king. It'll just be easier to make power (and to find parts for) the RB than it will be for the VQ.

good point, but it would take more to get a VQ over 1000. so thats why I like the RB.

Also, for anything other than 1/4 mile racing, generally you would go with the lightest engine with the most potential (thats why so many people are going for CA and SR swaps, their light.) simply due to balance problems with the 180lb gain of an RB over the stock KA (which if done right isn't all that much because with the proper motor mounts you can move it back and down enough to more properly center the weight.)

let me tell yo what i have seen .What i heard . the top secret japan used to swap VQ30DETT into Skyline R34 . i was so wondering why they did that for .they said -Nismo seems to be getting a head start on the new car by getting to know the new engine .The results are promissing . we can see the improvements of the V6 even on a paper--a lower hight and a shorter length . with those differences , the ceter of gravity is shifted lower and toward the core of the car , reducing polar inertia , and the most importantly , lap times . in addtion ,Nismo reports that the VQ platform loses little power to friction , has highly efficient combustion and is more durable than the RB . Nissan fits its supercar with an AWD layout , which is a dream on the streets , moutain passes , and the circuit . In the upper echelons of tuning , however , AWD turns from an asset into liability . An AWD configuration has lots of extra parts to break- twice as many axles , for instance .

I'm not saying that the VQ30DEtt is better than the RB , I'm just sharing with you guys some of the informations that i know .
