I would like to know if it is possible to remove the 4WD on a 1999 Ford Explorer The front of the drive shaft fell off and is still connected at the rear. They person that towed my SUV home said it is possible to remove the drive shaft and I will them have a rear wheel drive verses a 4WD. Not sure if this is possible. If it is not possbile does anyone have any idea as to the cost to replace the drive shaft in the kc area. One quote was 2500. Any and all comments would be appreciated.

2500 to replace a driveshaft is ridiculous. If the vehicle is 4WD then yes removing the driveshaft and driving is doable, HOWEVER if it is AWD you cannot just go about removing the front driveshaft and driving. You will cause further driveline damage.

Thank you for the response. It is 4WD and not ALL WD. Think I will at least give it at try and see how rear wheel drive works for a while.

Thank you again
