2002 Intrigue heater core replacement

I'm going to replace the heater core in my 2002 Intrigue. Has anyone here done this? I've been warned that it's a 12-16 hour job. I've reviewed the procedure in the GM service manual, and while tedious, it seems fairly straightforward. Except for the part where I'm supposed to remove the steering column :( as part of the I/P trim pad removal procedure. Is this really necessary, or can you reposition things and work around it?

Is heater core leaking? or just no heat? Steering column is no big deal.

Yes it's leaking, so I had to bypass it (which also cleared up a mystery overheating problem that started even before I started smelling coolant).
I could probably take out the steering column if it were really necessary, but would rather not take the chance of messing something up (like an SRS component). I'm hoping there's someone here who can confirm whether or not it's necessary, and any helpful tips or cautions are also welcome.

I was able to replace the heater core in my 1998 without too much grief. The steer column did not have to be removed, etc.
It was kinda tough working upside-down under the console and tight getting one of the panels back into place - didn' quite fit.

I think you can just remove the hushpanel on the driver's side, and there are two bolts holding the column up in place....remove and the column can rest on the seat

Thanks all. Yeah, it's a tight fit, but not as bad as working under the hood..

I was able to remove the IP trim pad without removing the steering column, but that was the most difficult part. The lower left corner of the IP trim pad gets stuck on the column (after removing top and bottom covers, turn signal & wiper switch). I actually took off that metal bracket from the IP trim pad after I got it out, which makes reassembly easier. Was going to rivet it back, but will probably just use nuts and bolts instead. I also taped a heavy piece of plastic around the column, which helps things slide over instead of getting caught. Having a 2nd person would have helped too.

Tech II - are you talking about unbolting that large magnesium piece? I think I see what you mean. Having that part even a few inches lower would have made it a lot easier.

After removing and replacing the dashboard (twice), I've discovered that this is most likely not even necessary. Try removing the storage compartment below the climate control. There are 3 screws on mine - two in back at the top, and the other in front at the bottom near the cup holder. Once you have that out, you should have enough clearance to remove both panels from the airbox and access the heater core.

You'll probably need to remove the center console, left and right sound insulators under the dashboard, and maybe the trim piece around the radio, but then that should be it. Wish I had noticed this before I did it the long way - could have gotten it done in half the time.
