Hi ,I have a 1998 E-150 van. The oil an water warning light came on when I started engine up on driveway. I have not driven it until I find out if it's safe to. Sometimes the gauges all show normal oil pressures and water temperatures. Sometimes when I start up all the gauges are dead except the red oil/water warning light. Any help appreciated.

Is the battery charging correctly? On some cars when the alternator craps out it will illuminate additional lights on the dash as a warning that the battery is not receiving proper charge.

The alternator is putting out 14.2 volts so it must be working.
The four gauges are now stubbornly remaining flat lined ( fuel /water/oil pressure/volt meter), red oiland water water warning light still on

A quick Google shows that Ford trucks from the same era of your van have issues with the O/D shift wire chafing. It apparently shares commonality with the gauges and such can cause issues with them.
Someone else suggested checking fuse #19 and even wiggling it while watching the gauges.
It may be a different number on your van, but it is at least a starting point.

I searched again and basically came up with the same answers. The problem could be the shift wire, it could be a fuse (someone mentioned #29), or it could be a failed cluster.
If I were you I would use the search feature here to see if you can come up with anything. If unsuccessful Googling "98 E150 cluster issues" will give you a number of results that you can look into.
Just be sure to come back and post up diagnostics tried and results in case anyone else here runs across the same issue.
