Revell/Monogram makes and excellent 427 Cobra kit but it is 1/24 scale. I have a few built AMT 1/25 Cobra is in my collection and the Monogram kit looks out place next to them. So I want to build a 1/25 scale Big Block (BB) Cobra.

Comparison of scale. The AMT kit is on the right, The Sunny 427 kit is center and the Revell/Monogram is left.

Kit I am starting with.

The BB Cobra ran coil spring suspension. The small block (SB) car ran leaf spring suspension. The Sunny kit is based on the AMT kit which is a SB car. Although the Sunny kit includes most of the body mods for the BB car it includes and incorrect chassis and engine.

Here I have modified the Monogram suspension to fit the Sunny chassis. The stock AMT chassis is shown for comparison.

You will note I haven't modified the rear suspension. The rear suspension is almost complete obscured on the finished model. I may added the coil-overs (if I have room) to make the rear suspension more accurate.

Why don't you buy the Shelby Collectibles Cobra 289. It is pretty good and can be torn apart just like a plastic kit and it is supposed to be 1/24th scale. A lot more versions are available for the Cobra in 1/24th scale than 1/25th.

Yes there is a lot more Cobra choices in 1/24 scale. But a 1/24 scale 427 overwhelms my other 1/25 scale 289 Cobras. Its a lot of extra work but I think its worth it.

jc, can u make a picture of the front end of the different bodies? I just would like to see if they spotted well the particular air intake from the 289 fia car.

Thanks Paolo. The FIA Cobras maintained the original "D" shaped nose while the 427 cars have a larger oval shape and the oil cooler opening underneath. The 427 engine required a lot more cooling than the 289.

The gray car on the right is the AMT kit, a 289 Cobra. This kit:

This is what the nose of the AMT kit looks like. Picture is from another of my Cobra projects.

Using the 1/25 scale Revell Parts Pack 427 engine for the block, heads & transmission and some other bits. The headers, intake manifold and carbs come from the 1/24 scale Monogram 427 modified to fit.

Nice stuff JC. The side pipes look a lot better and the dash as well. Are the gauges just decals with a clear cover or are they aftermarket ones?

Looking forward to more updates.

The gauges aren't decals, they are just printed on glossy paper. I found them on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201473103581?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The gauges are mounted from behind. I then flow in Future floor polish. The Future shrinks a lot so it takes a few applications to build up thickness. On the last application I placed a photo-etch trim ring inside the gauge and flow more Future on top of it. Once dried the Future holds the ring in place.

Thank you. The steering wheel is the kit part. I "painted" the spokes with a silver Sharpie marker an flowed some thinned black paint into the center
hub. The rim was done with a brown Sharpie marker. It doesn't provide solid coverage so the lighter areas look like wood grain.
