2002 V-6 fuel pump.

I replaced the fuel pump today because my mechanic said it was the cause of my starting problem. I got the AC-Delco factory replacement with the new connector. I connected it as per instructions with the crimp and heat-shrink connectors. Hooked it all up and nothing. No noise. Checked for voltage at the connector. Nothing. I cut out the connectors and soldered the wires. Still no voltage on the pump wires but the fuel guage works. I changed the relay and the fuse. Still nothing. Where should I look next? There was current before I took it apart because it was running OK, just starting hard.

Boy do I feel stupid. I would never have thought that the fuel pump would share a grounding bolt with the taillight wiring at the rear of the frame. I took that bolt out to free up the harness enough to raise the bed up to get to the fuel pump. Then when I got the pump installed and connected I wanted to test it before lowering the bed. But I hadn’t grounded it. The ground wire runs into the bundle of wires with all the other fuel pump wires, but then it runs to the rear with the taillight wires, and all the other fuel pump wires go forward. After I grounded it, it works fine.

MANY TIMES people do not check the grounds.. what they do is put ground meter lead to the metal frame then see if the hot wires are hot... what they do not check is to see that the ground wire is grounded , and not voltage on it .. so they think it has power to pump ,so the pump is bad..

frame rail grounds are a common problem .. could be your pump was bad or a rusted corroded ground.

good you soldered the wires ....also this old changing the relay is good along with the filter. placing rust proofing over the frame ground connection after filing down the rust is recommended..
