Lancia 037 with a big difference Part 2

As some of you may know I was building a 1/10th Lancia 037 as no one was making a large scale rally car.
See.
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1063099
I was enjoying myself but my modelling time is limited.
So when MFH said they were bring out a 037 in 1/12th scale I had to get one.
I order a different version so at some point I could get back to mine.
Well it has come now.

A year? three years to me and I would make a mess of it!
I so admire people who are willing to spend this amount and have the skills to pull it off.
Maybe one day I will get there.

Started on the front frame.
All going together ok.
Made sure everything was good before using glue.
Will take screws out later when fixed.
But have found out the shocks are about 2mm to short and dont like the springs.
Can work with them but want them to look right.
So will make up better shocks from these parts and some other bits.

This is wrong.
The 2 parts from the kit.

Also have photos to back this up.

I have many photos I have taken for when I was building the 1/10th scale model.
But always good to have as many as you can get.

The top bar is supposed to be a sort of strut brace with adjustable ends. You are right in saying it looks more like a steering stabilizer. Interesting.....just checked my reference book and the real part does not look like the kit part.
Never mind I just looked at the kit instructions...I see what they did, They put a steering stabilizer on the "frame because to lazy to make it where it's supposed to be. Good catch!

in the kit you only get the spring in the black circle.
so will have to make another spring and fixings like in the white circle.

I'm Pretty sure in the instructions you are supposed to add a piece of stainless wire directly behind the strut assembly. I don't know why other than to set the correct ride height,or to keep suspension from settling over time. Maybe tha'ts why your springs appeared short. I will check that on mine this evening. I also drilled the hole in the lower a-arm pretty deep where the bottom of strut goes in.
Nice progress. I was gung ho for about two weeks and burned out by all the drilling. I keep it on the desk just to remind me that it needs to be worked on.

The wire is to stop the suspsion from bottoming out.
But in all my photos I have never found them on the front susp only the rear.

Yes I see them on the rear also...It was usually a cable of sorts to keep the suspension from over extending during jumps. On the kit however I think hiro put them in place to keep the weight of the kit from trying to bend over time....which doesn't really make sense, since it sits on stands when finished....weird. Did you ever think to make the steering pose able? I was gonna try that if wasn't gonna take all year to figure out.

Hi Martin
nice progress, doing the same kit, I am a bit further in process and since I was following your progress on that huge scratch build I assume you have a lot of references. One thing that is bothering me is location and look of ignition coil, because there isn't any in kit and on pictures I have you can't see the location of the coil. Do you have some picture or at least location, I assume it is on the left hand side wall close to volumex unit.
Thank you in advance and good luck with the kit.
Here is where I stand at the moment

the coil was on the left side of the engine,in front of the Comprex compressor, fixed on the aluminium panel, where there were also the fuel pumps...
a hidden place...I know....

Great! Just what I needed, I suspected that it is somewhere there and it is simple design, no problem to schratch build.
Thanks Martin

Nice work,Sjelic..
the coil was on the left side of the engine,in front of the Comprex compressor, fixed on the aluminium panel, where there were also the fuel pumps...
a hidden place...I know....
Martin, very detailed and convincing work!
Grazie Alessandro, I will skip the pumps since air filter blocks that part anyhow but coil is a must.
Thank you guys, you helped me a lot, sorry Martin for jumping in thread

....in the last two photos of Martin, the coil is clearly visible....(with a lot of rust on it... ) :smooch:
I often saw the coil more hidden on the left panel, but it's not so important...And maybe the '83 spec had the coil in that position...

slow going but back on it.
Out of all the photos a have only one car was black inside, all the rest were silver.
So I went for silver.
Added a tube and spring to the the cable.
Only 1 photo at moment .

You are doing a great job on this not-easy kit.
I personnally regret that the engineering of this model is not up to the price tag, to say the least :(

Still working on the inside.
The straps for the extinguisher are not that good , so made new ones from the metal on a floppy disc.

Then on to the seat and frames.
some small parts to paint so stuck them onto some masking tape.

you do not get enough red ribbon for the seats belts, so have had to ordersome more. Also you do not get any measurements for the belts so that is a pain.

Been a bit slow but thought I would show photos of the Engine MFH 1/12th scale and my scratch built 1/10th scale.
MHF done with CAD mine done with eyes and my hands.
I don't think I did to bad.
They are 2 versions 1/10th is early and 1/12th late.

You've done it great! Your engine is more vivid than MFH's.

I keep looking at the dash and I can't help but wonder where you found those Giant Tamiya prop bottle.
Because there is no way this dash is in scale, is it?
Kidding aside, this is masterful model building. Inspiring and discouraging in equal mesures! :)
