Crown Vic Transmission Question

Could I just replace the tailshaft or do I need a new transmission and could I replace it myself or do I need to take it to a shop thanks and god bless....
I have a 89 crownvictoria V8 5.0 it has a hole in the front end tailshaft...and I wanted to know could the tailshaft just be replaced or do I have to replace the whole transmission...please anyone email me with any information thanks and god bless...
