Thinking of getting a VW golf

I am driving a POS '80 F-100 right now. The damn thing gets honestly 8 miles per gallon. My brother drives a hand me down '98 Astro van. He is going off to college and can't take his car. I asked my dad if we could sell my truck, the astro van and an aerostar we have in our garage and use the money we get to buy me a more economically feasable car.

I was thinking of getting a Golf, the four door. anywhere from a 96+ would be fine by me, depending on how much we get for the vans and the truck.

My main question is this: I want a car I can get for around 7-10 grand that I can work on, and eventually maybe race it. My main goal for the car is more geared towards the "show" aspect of things. And not car shows. Just a nice car. nice rims, system, eventually some screens. But I also want it to be able to go fast when I want it.

So if the Golf a good pick? here is my criteria:

1. Has to be a manual trans.

2. Can not be a honda. Or any other rice crap for that matter.

3. Would strongly prefere a four door.

Any help would be great.

seems like you like the hatchbacks sence you picked a golf right? i was debating about getting a golf III when i was buying my hatch cause there are so many hondas that were fixed up. I think if you want a non honda hatch GET THE GOLF!!! I've seen some fast ass golfs and you can do some nice engine swaps with em. but any other sujjestions? a FOCUS HATCH, or a 88 diesel volvo wagon..... j/k.

I'll pass on the focus hatch, have seen a few, didn't like them. struck me as too big. and ugly.

I am pretty set on having the four door. I think with alittle work even with the extra weight I will be able to beat the GTI

If I do get the golf, what engine should I drop in there, if I do change it.

EDIT: One 97 Golf I was looking at featured a 2.0L I4 engine. At the risk of sounding like a novice (which I would be) what does the I4 mean? Does it have to do with the cylinders?

inline 4
all 4 cylinders inline

get a vr6, will be nice stock
i want a 1.8t cheaper turbo upgrade cause it is alrdy turbo, but the vr6 will get more power out of the same upgrades due to the bigger motor

"get a vr6, will be nice stock"

Thanks for the suggestion, but I want a four door and the vr6 doesn't have that option.

I am looking at the '97 golf, which I beleive has the 2.0 inline 4. I can turbocharge that right? I am just reading up on some stuff.

I'd say ditch the golf idea and get an old Formula firebird Lt1.

I guess your right.

The firebird is everything I need! Four doors, a hatchback... check and check!

Give me a break man.

Did a search on AutoTrader and look what I found (less then) 6 miles from my own 92120?

Its got the 4 doors I want, the 4I, and well, let this ad enlighten you further:

1996 VW GOLF GL-4dr, 5spd, AC, PS, PB, tilt, P/moonroof, great sound system & CD, low miles, 17" custom wheels & more, beautiful metallic blue on gray cloth int, very sporty & fun to drive, special, only $5995

I mean, who can pass up a car that is "sporty and fun to drive"

It isn't the 1997 I was looking for, but it is close enough, at a price I like.

The best part, sorta, is that it is already blue, the color I wanted. All it needs now are yellow underlights and I will be the coolest swede in San Diego! heh. if you don't get it you won't get it.

I went down there (walked my dog) The salesman, named Hossein, didn't pop the hood for me. But he did say he might be enterested in a 98 chevy van we wont be needing pretty soon, I might even get a straight trade, or who knows, some cash!

I don't like the wheels that are on it, G something, black ones.

Well, what do you think?

get it if you like it, i kinda like the rims on that color

Wow, 0-60 in 9.7? The black rims are cool, maybe get some white or gold Volks. I wouldnt buy the car unless the dealer lets you test drive it, and thats pretty shady how he wouldnt pop the hood. Im always cautious in buying cars that have already been modded.

Ps. The Lt1 was just my personal preference, seeing how the stock GL is very slow, and it was just a suggestion. No Need to be a DiCK about it :gay:

Who said 0-60 in 9.7?

I didn't really ask the dealer to pop the hood, so I am not worried about that. Sorry for the lip regarding your Lt1. Starting off with a slow end car is more fun for me, because its like building a bridge: What would you have more proud in, building one from the ground or finishing one that is half completed?
