2003 s10 pickup AC problem

Friend bought a 2003 s10 pickup. AC does not work so he brought over to my house so we could try to add freon.

Compressor come on when he puts ac switch but no cold air.

I tried to add freon and would not suck it in, can did not get cold.

I tried to see if any freon was in the system by pushing in the needle on the low side and nothing but air came out. I got it to where the compressor clutch stopped working. So I tried to add freon again and still nothing.

Does this sound like the compressor is gone and or the dry evaporator canister bad?

He is willing to get a used compressor and try and see if that is the problem since the compressor had no freon in it. If it still had air in the system and clutch turned on I might think there are no leaks if there was there should be no air in system and clutch should not work/come on.

What do you all suggest.

thanks

Probably have a huge leak and air is in the system....need to find the leak and repair....then you have to pull a vacuum on the system to remove all moisture before adding the correct amount of freon(and oil if necessary), by weight....

If there was a leak there would of been no pressure in the system. I released all the pressure and there was no freon in system, nothing but air.

When i released the pressure the compressor stopped and when i tried to add freon the compressor clicked on but no cold air.

the can also did not get cold as they usually do when its sucking the freon in.
