Gearbox question

When you move the steering wheel vehicle not running is the spline shaft supposed to move back and forth. I know it should move a tiny bit but that movement should be a turning movement not wobble movement. am I right

Yes you are right, it should not ever go side to side more than a few thousands of an inch.
