Subaru Legacy Vs. Ford Fusion

My parents are seriously considering getting a new car.
My Dad is very hot on the Legacy given Subaru's earned reputation for quality and reliability as well as the general long term value of Japanese cars.
However, my Mom is not a fan of the Legacy and really likes the Ford Fusion. As she thinks it's a very pretty car and she enjoyed driving it more then the Legacy.
I was wondering if Ford's reliability has improved over the past 10 years? As my parents have a long running suspicion of American cars since they have had bad experiences in the past with them?
Also how does the safety ratings compare between the Fusion and the Legacy? From what I understand they both scored similarly.
