2004 Duratec Water Pump and Cooling System Diagram

Have had a minor coolant leak recently. I had a pressure test a few months ago, couldn't find anything. Finally today, the Wife and I took a ride to the beach (about 160 mile round trip). When we got home I looked under the car and saw coolant dripping down from the Water Pump. No biggie, car hit 161K on the way home today.

I looked at it as a blessing in disguise, I have never changed a hose on the car. I have drained and refilled the antifreeze a few times. So I know I need a water pump and I would like to replace all of the hoses and Thermostat.

I checked out Rock Auto, there are so many different looking hoses under Upper Hose, Lower Hose, Bypass Hose, etc. I don't know what to buy. There are plenty of instructions for Cooling Systems and water pump replacement on this website for Vulcan Engines and some for older Duratecs but none for 2004's. I used the search feature and came up empty.

Would anyone have a Cooling System Diagram and maybe a brief tutorial on Water Pump replacement for an 04 without a Tensioner.

Thanks in advance!! MikeD

I don't have a system diagram or a brief tutorial, but I can provide you with the steps from the factory service manual in PDF form. If you're interested, send me a Private Message and include the request (to refresh my memory of what you need) and an e-mail address for you that can accept PDF attachments.

Just wanted to thank you Rod for all of your help. The original 11 year old hoses were in remarkably good shape. I changed the Upper and Lower radiator hoses and 1 other small hose. There was one hose, possibly the Bypass hose that although I had a new one, I didn't change it for fear of breaking something else. I did replace the Thermostat and put in a mix of Motorcraft Gold and Distilled water.

The diagrams you sent me allowed me to study them a little before the work began. You are certainly an asset to this website Rod, always going out of your way to take the time to help myself and so many others!! Thank you once again.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. You may want to throw that new bypass hose in the glovebox in the event the old one breaks while you're on the road. It would be nice to have it ready to go rather than trying to find a parts store. That old hose is probably the new "weakest link" in your cooling system.
