Converters are Rattling

I have had really good luck with my 2009 Silverado Ext Cab with 98,000 miles until now. I have a ripped CV boot so I need a new half shaft and my catalytic converters are rattling. The rest of the exhaust is in good shape with dual pipes but since I have to replace the whole converter system I would like recommendations for a better flowing system that won't throw any codes.
Any ideas?

what codes ? the DTC issue is a good reason the converters are rattling.

Hey j cat...you have helped me lots in the past with stuff...glad to see you are still here.
All I have is rattles and no codes. If I replace the converters and y pipe I just want to make sure if I get an aftermarket setup it won't mess up the computer.

the rattle is from converter your sure ?? could be muffler or the metal body heat shields .. 98K these all should be good .. I had a shield rattle before.

still have the OEM exhaust system 15 yrs 160K miles.

The truck at idle makes a rattley noise and especially when you give it a little gas from a stop...like when moving up in line at Mcdonalds. Other then that you never hear anything. I took it to a Midas and when it was up in the air they banged on the left converter and said "here is your noise, your converters are falling apart inside." So, it's possible it is a shield around the converter? My neighbor is replacing my struts and half shaft and I'll ask him to check the converters.

I had another vehicle where some rocks got in between the heat shield and the cat. Hit the cat and it rattled.

sonny 01 , i posted something similar to your post , i thought motor was ready to toss a rod or something , i drove it up on ramps and did a cold start with remote while under truck to hear what was rattling . was kind of relieved to hear cats rattling like crazy. i dont have any heat shields just solid cans (2007 silverado /5.3) . bought a new walker 50469 to replace with but waiting for winter to get out of maine so i can power wash bottom first. Hats off to Jcat his area got way more than there share of snow and ole man winter also. I also had a couple of broken bolts on back end of lt side exhaust manifold . I saw attachments on u tube that a shop (KRAL.com ) makes to bolt on and hold manifold by tighten a pinch bolt against manifold . I made one similar been working fine . happy motoring .

Update...tonight I had the right half shaft replaced which had a torn boot and which Midas told me was what was making a cracking sound when you turn the wheel and both strut packages. And I still have the problem... So we opened the hood and found the problem and it wasn't all that hard to find. While turning the steering wheel with the engine running you can see the center part of the rack and pinion moving back and forth about a quarter inch. I think there should be a bushing on a small arm that attaches to the center part to the left of where the steering goes into the box if you are looking at it from the front. Any idea on what part I'm talking about and maybe what it's going to take to fix it?

That's what I told a frame shop today and they looked from the under the hood and up from the bottom and they said my bushings are good and that the noise is from the skid plate flexing. So, my question now is...should the center part of the rack and pinion move 1/4" side to side when in park with the engine running when you turn the steering wheel back and forth?

They have rubber bushings with bushings in the center of the hole for the bolts. Normally one side is pulling and the otherside is pushing on the tire. A worn inner tie rod end may be giving you the opinion the rack is moving.

It was the skid plate that was causing the cracking...And...I took the truck in to have it aligned and ask about the rattle in the exhaust and when I left they had me convinced that I needed a whole exhaust system cats and all. So I took it to a little shop that was in my old neighborhood that I haven't been to in 30 years. I explained the problem and they stuck it on the rack. They found three broken clamps and one was where the center cat connected to the pipe going to the muffler. That one was a big clamp that went over some kind of ball/socket deal. They cut that out and welded in a new pipe, replaced the two other clamps and charged me $53.75.
No more rattle!

MY 2000 170K miles OEM 15 plus yr old exhaust not one problem ..

GM is screwing us... with these chinese vehicles !!!

chinese metal that is whats the problem, low quality very weak and rusts out very fast. keep an eye on those chinese motor mounts they fall out !
