Ok, so me and my g/f's brother argued over my g/f's car. He says that the car has a timing belt, and it needs to be replaced soon.. I say its a chain (did a little research).. for you sentra guru's , whats on a Ga16de motor? A timing belt or chain?

I'm kinda new to cars, i just changed oil for the first time yesterday, so don't judge me, but what's the difference between a timing chain and a timing belt?

My dads ahd a chain because my dads had a chain. Thats one of the 40 things that went wrong with mine. A chain is made out of metal and grease and a belt is made out of rubber and are more flexible.

Sweet, thanks for the help (finally :bloated: hehe) My g/f's bro will be kinda pissed when he finds out i was right (i coulda found out earlier.... but im not taking apart half the engine to get to the chain and im too lazy to check the haynes manual at pepboys lol) ... He claimed that the belt was stretched and needed to be replaced so that the engine will run better.... but chains dont stretch :sly:

You need to tell him what they are and explain them more. Maybe he dosent know anything at all about cars.

well he asked what the difference is between a timing belt and a timing chain....they do the same thing, the only difference is what they're made of, and I'm sorry if I assumed that he knew what a belt was made of and what a chain was made of

a belt is rubber and wears out, a chain is metal and doesn't....I don't know what else to say

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure that:

E-series motors (E16i /E16s) - Timing Belt
GA - Series motors (GA16i / GA16DE) - Timing Chain
SR - Series motors (SR20DE / SR20DET) - Timing Chain

so chain belts never need replacing?

Timing chains do wear I just replaced my timing chain yesterday it had worn and the timing started to get messed up. I heard that timing chains are better than belts I heard that they last longer and that they keep the timing from coming out of adjustment better.
