For many of the pre-1991 cars the VSS and the yellow VSS buffer box were mounted to the rear of the speedometer. If there is a speedometer cable on the transmission, the VSS is likely on the speedo.
Be aware that the lack of a VSS signal may not be due to a faulty VSS. That 2K/4K signal splitter and buffer can fail, or may not have connection, or may not have power.

Thank you ok I didn't you know that because the speedometer had stopped working so I replace the cable today and the speed sensor they give me at the parts store look nothing like what the electrical connection by the speedometer cable on a transmission so I returned it. test drove the car the light still came on as soon as I release the accelerator after driving at highway speeds the light flashes on. but there was nothing attached to the back of the speedometer

If the speedometer cable was broken, that would be why you got the code 24. The VSS, as Blue Bowtie stated, is located on the rear of the speedo head. If the cable isn't turning the speedo, then the VSS won't read.
Get the speedometer working and your problems will go away.

This is the sensor (end of red/black/green wires), and the splitter/buffer.

NO .. these style valves are good for 10 years then they fail to operate as designed.
they fail many ways not just from debris/carbon..
