After a few years of pondering, starting kits, but generally not getting anywhere, I seem to have got up some steam with this kit I bought as a bargain price at Telford in 2013.

http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag20/Beakster-/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/TAMIYA-1_12-Yamaha-YZR500-OW70-1_zps983e9761.jpg (http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/Beakster-/media/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/TAMIYA-1_12-Yamaha-YZR500-OW70-1_zps983e9761.jpg.html)

I'm not so keen on the Taira livery, especially when there's the Marlboro one to do!

http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag20/Beakster-/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/ow70-2_zpsd3fba7fb.jpg (http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/Beakster-/media/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/ow70-2_zpsd3fba7fb.jpg.html)

I'm generally inspired to choose kits that I can detail with extra wires etc. I'm not quite ready for a YZR-M1 with all the upgrades, so bikes from the 80's seem a good choice to gain experience. Hopefully I can get some of the detail in the next picture on to the kit. We'll see!

http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag20/Beakster-/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/latodestro_zpsc1c3c0d3.jpg (http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/Beakster-/media/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/latodestro_zpsc1c3c0d3.jpg.html)

I've made a start with the frame, and most of the engine parts. All parts are put on to their 'sticks' and cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner before priming. I've sprayed Halfords grey primer from the can but going to try Zero and Alclad primers next week.

http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag20/Beakster-/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/254ACEA2-18F0-4D25-8CF1-10ED38BBCE10_zps1qenknnt.jpg (http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/Beakster-/media/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/254ACEA2-18F0-4D25-8CF1-10ED38BBCE10_zps1qenknnt.jpg.html)

I was looking for something like a dull polished aluminium look for the frame so I tried the polished aluminium Alclad straight on to the primer. It's a bit too flat, but I think if I'd sprayed over black enamel it would be too shiny. You can see the difference in the next picture.

http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag20/Beakster-/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/E2E2760D-C1AA-46C3-AF6E-666E5964D2E5_zpshnskh3ep.jpg (http://s1296.photobucket.com/user/Beakster-/media/Yamaha%20YZR500%201983/E2E2760D-C1AA-46C3-AF6E-666E5964D2E5_zpshnskh3ep.jpg.html)

I'll get on with some detail painting on the engine and radiator over the next few days.

Nice start! I have 3 of these in the stash, and I built this kit in 1994, (and still have it
in a display case). You can always flatten a metallic finish, so I sometimes go glossy
first, and flatten it to fine tune it. Love those cylinder heads! Marco

Most parts of the engine have been assembled.

The main block was spayed Alclad engine manifold, should be a browny colour but has come out a little darker in the picture. Alclad polished aluminium was sprayed on the heads with Tamiya clear red on the bolts. I've detailed the other bolts with silver and added rings just below the carbs using thin strips of foil from a wine bottle.

I'm pleased so far...

I think the tubing Tamiya supplies for the leads on the spark plugs is too thick so I added some thinner wire. I used "tiger tail wire" I found on eBay. It comes in various sizes and colours. Handy stuff for us :smokin:

I took the Tamiya plug, cut the "nipple" off and then cleaned any excess material to give a smooth surface to drill a small hole in. Then I glued in the wire and painted semi-gloss black with a silver coat of paint ringing the base of the plug.

Depends on which forums you belong to, some forums limit pictures
to 600X800 pixels, so I have had to change my Photobucket parameters.
This forum seems fine with larger files. Carry on! You're doing great!

Done a little work on a water hose with clips added.

I got the shape on the hose by inserting brass wire in to the Tamiya wire, cutting it short so the ends were still hollow to allow easy fitting.

I manage to find the self adhesive aluminium tape I had to make the bands for the clip. Much easier than glueing foil from a wine bottle!

The screw on the clip is a small piece of solder. Placing this was easy once I got the right technique. Cut the pointy end off a cocktail stick. Put a dab of glue on the silver band with a cocktail stick using the pointy end, lick the cut end of the stick and use that end to pick up the tiny piece of solder wire and place on the glue.

I just came across a build for this kit that showed part of the throttle control on the engine. Thought I'd have a go.

Will be fun getting the engine in to the frame without damaging anything!

I've been working on the cowling. I decided to remove the small details (bolt heads) with a fibre glass pen to make sanding easier. I've just got some tiny photo etch bolt heads to replace the detail I've removed that should look more realistic.

The part on the left is straight off the sprue, the right is cleaned up.

Thanks, I'm pleased with the pulley. I couldn't find any pictures of the real thing, but I think it looks right.

Most of the P.E. bolts will go on after painting. All the pictures of the bike I've found show them as shiny bolts apart from a couple on the front around the rider's number that have been painted over.

I'm going to add muffler springs, not something I've done before. Here's the mount on the exhaust pipe, should have placed it before painting but I forgot so I'll re-spray these parts later.

It's made from a small strand of wire from an audio cable. I did try using stiffer wire at first but it was a pain to work in to the right shape, the audio wire is quite flexible.

Thanks Christophe, glad you're enjoying it. I've spent enough time looking at other builds on this forum, hopefully I can give something back with this WIP.

I've been working on the exhaust silencers. I spayed the part semi-gloss black and then masked 2mm at each end of the main barrel, painted silver by hand on the end and then coated the whole part with Jonson Klear. Once dried I removed the tape, this gave a slight difference in sheen where the tape was. I then placed 1.3mm round bolt heads from a Top Studio P.E. set using PVA (white) glue. Using PVA allowed me to move the bolt heads more easily than superglue, and clean up is easy. The bolt heads sat a little proud for my liking so I again coated the whole part in Klear, softening the definition.

The wheels are getting there. I sprayed Zero white basecoat followed by Zero Marlboro Red with Zero gloss to finish. The edges of the rims were hand brushed with a mix of acrylic silver and black to get the graphite colour. I think I'll paint a dark wash over this later to even out the brush painting and darken the finish a little.

I've been doing a batch of priming and basecoating, nothing worth posting pictures of.

But here's how I make the banjo connectors found on the end brake hoses.

Take a piece of cable of the right diameter, then drill a small hole through the sheath that's left. Place a tiny drop of thick CA glue over the hole. Thin will dry to quickly and not give you time if the rod doesn't fit in properly at the first attempt! Then insert a piece of plastic rod through the hole and let it dry. Carefully cut either side of the rod and fill the hole each side of rod with a drop of CA.

You could of course place a scale bolt through the hole at the last stage instead of filling it. I'm going to use a P.E. bolt head over the filled hole.

Had a go a scribing a couple of the panel lines on the front cowling. I've had the scriber for years but never used it after messing up once! This time I went lightly and slowly for the first 5 passes before apply a bit more pressure. It worked!

You can clearly see the different between the scribed part (left) and what it was like before. Will make a difference once a few coats of paint are on.

Just made an accidental discovery... at a cost though!

I thought I'd use isopropyl alcohol to clean any grease off the exhausts I'd coated in black enamel gloss before spraying Alclad chrome. Not such a great idea as it started to affect the paint. Not the end of the world, but it lead me to think if it would work as a paint stripper as I'm re-doing the frame to get a shinier finish. I've used Halfords (UK auto store) primer on this and it's been slow to come off, but the alcohol has worked straight away. Despite the initial mistake, this will save time!

Exhaust have been coming along today. I've only ever done a tiny bit of heat staining before so I was a bit nervous about trying it - only one way to learn though!

As it happens, I'm pleased with the results and not dissimilar to some reference pictures I have. I might do a bit more work on them, but will leave it for the moment to have a think about it.

It's Alclad chrome, with various Alcad clear colours over the top. Weld seams were masked with thin strips of Tamiya tape and a couple of tiny blobs of Blu-Tack in places.

The stanchions were finished in Alclad chrome with a coat of Klear to protect the finish whilst they were masked of for painting the lower legs.

Lower legs were sprayed Alclad pale burnt metal with other details brush painted silver and gold. Decals are from the MSM Creation set for the bike. They went on fine over a coat of Klear with a little Micro Set / Sol to settle them, finishing with a coat of Alclad semi matt Klear Kote to seal them.

I've added a bit of detail painting on the bolt heads of the callipers and put the brake hoses in place. I also made a thin mix of black acrylic paint and applied this to the join between the stanchions and lower legs to simulate the seal. Capillary action helped this flow around, and being a thin mix it's easy to clean up if you go wrong.

Looking at the picture I'm thinking I should have added a back to the brake callipers.

I've been experimenting making the muffler springs for the exhausts. This one was made with a piece of the wire from the audio cable used earlier in this WIP wrapped around the shaft of a 0.3mm drill bit. I then cut the excess about 1.5mm past the end of the coil and used fine pointed tweezers to bend the end into shape. It wasn't too hard to do and I don't have to stick to the sizes available from TS or MFH.

I've finished stripping the frame and have filled the inner sides. A bit more work to be done, but it'll be worth it. I'm also getting closer to getting the cowls reading for painting. There's been a bit of work to do priming and filling.

Hi, sorry I've been away so long, but summer is nearly over so that does mean more time for me to be modelling again!

I've managed to get the frame stripped, filled and painted, along with a bit of work on the rear swing arm.

There's a foam pad that the fuel tank rests on. After getting some foam from Hiroboy, I decided it was too thick and used a some wet and dry paper instead.

The rear brake assembly on the frame is now almost done. Just a bit of touching up to do and cables to fix in place.

I think it's time for the engine to go in the frame...

I couldn't resist dry fitting the radiator and exhausts to see how they look.

I love it when you read about nice clean builds that go together well... That's not how I'd describe today's modelling so far!

Maybe it's me today, a few silly mistakes, but all part of the learning curve. If I wasn't posting here I may have put this model down again!

Anyway, here's where we are so far:

Just caught up with your build... It's going well!
One thought: Depending on how certain wiring, cables, etc
need to be either "stiffer" (cables, brake lines), or "softer" (electrical etc),
I have begun using lead wire, painted flat Nato Black. Brake lines and clutch
cables are heat-shrunk and stretched 1.2mm TopStudio shrink tube.
Sometimes it's nice to have a wire stay put, and easily bent
into position, and laying naturally, so I use lead wire in that situation...
You can buy it in tiny diameters at fly-tying shops.. 010" 012" 015" 020" 025"
I learned this from a local friend who builds 1/35 Armor vehicles.
Enjoying your work!, Marco

Thanks for the tip Marco. I have some lead wire but overlooked that idea. I can think of at least one place where is would have been easier to use.

Can anyone suggest any silver/aluminium paints to use for the main frames on bikes? I opted for Alclad as I like the finish (although it's a bit rough on this build - better surface prep needed next time!) The problem I have is it comes off too easily after handling a few times. Should I coat with clear next time, or is there a better paint?

A small update. I've been spraying the cowlings, they're just drying and then need decaling. For the moment here's how the springs on the exhaust turned out. I'll certainly be making my own again for any future builds.

Heat staining on those mufflers are superb! I really enjoy your progress!!
Adding extra wiring is always troublesome as you have to get them fitted and to stay in place while adding others. I mostly use fishing line but they can be hard to get bent in sharp curves.

Just had a read of this WIP, looks good mate! The Alclads tend to be fairly delicate, I suggest using the Alclad Aqua Gloss Clear to protect it.

Keep up the good work!

Amazing your work congratulations highlighting the drive pedal rear brake, and drive the valves of YPVS, a question springs of exhausts you made or bought ready?
I prefer the version with the colors of factory as in the box, but this version of Marlboro was much better.
