jeep will not run.

I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 liter eng. I can get it to run for a couple of seconds then it will die. It will run with the starter engaged.

Do a simple diagnostic check. Turning your key to power the vehicle but not start it in the series of ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON and your check engine light should flash a series of times. If you see just 5-5 flashes then your problem can't be diagnosed by the ecu so your problem lies else where.

Can you be a little more detailed about how your Jeep dies? Any weird sounds or anything like that. I can't really be sure about what the problem is without more info.

He probably won't be able to use that ON-OFF-ON-OFF method.

1988 Cherokees have Bendix/Renix computer systems that have no check engine light and store no codes... all you can do is monitor the system while the engine is running. They do have an EMISS MAINT lamp, but that is only controlled by a timer.
