I am very glad to show you my new project, the Gulf McLaren F1 GTR Longtail!!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/NAVEORIGINAL_zps032a329b.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/NAVEORIGINAL_zps032a329b.jpg.html)

I really like the aerodynamic shape of this car, and all the technology McLaren used to compete with the Porsche 911 GT1 and the Mercedez-Benz CLK-GTR.

I will replicate chassis 028R, the #1 Gulf Team Davidoff car that ran in the 1997 FIA GT season.

I was very excited when Aoshima announced their McLaren F1 GTR Longtail. The detail and building design of the model is excellent.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CAJAMODELO_zps6c0d0e0f.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CAJAMODELO_zps6c0d0e0f.jpg.html)

Fortunately, Tabu Design released decals to do the 1997 FIA GT version of the car. Studio 27 did templated decals for the Aoshima kit; they are a little thick, but with decal solvent and a hair dryer they lay down beautifully.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CALCAS_zpscc1cd1fc.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CALCAS_zpscc1cd1fc.jpg.html)

I want to add some detail to the model, so I will use Hobby Design Detail set and Brake System.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DETALLES_zps26533620.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DETALLES_zps26533620.jpg.html)

The blue paint of this specific car has a pearlescent effect. I will use ZERO PAINTS Gulf blue and orange. I will spray a coat of Pearl Tinter over the blue paint.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ZERO1_zpsa7236081.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ZERO1_zpsa7236081.jpg.html)

Aoshima did a great job with the McLaren kit. The body looks absolutely accurate with the option to show the doors and engine cover in open or closed position.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CARROCERIA1_zpsc369c94f.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CARROCERIA1_zpsc369c94f.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CARROCERIA2_zpsb9d47728.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CARROCERIA2_zpsb9d47728.jpg.html)

Let's begin!!

I will start filling some injection holes in the engine area of the chassis. Don't worry, you won't have to do a lot of filling, almost all mold holes are cleverly hidden. Aoshima just missed some of them in the chassis.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS12_zps663fe12d.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS12_zps663fe12d.jpg.html)

I will sand off the molded rear air diffusers and add photoetched ones.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS11_zpsdd608335.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS11_zpsdd608335.jpg.html)

The only parts Aoshima oversimplified in this kit are the suspension/brake parts. I want to add cooling ducts for the front brakes, so I will scratchbuild them with aluminum tubing and springs.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS1_zps20c0de80.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS1_zps20c0de80.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS2_zpsdade9267.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS2_zpsdade9267.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS3_zps98e07aee.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS3_zps98e07aee.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS4_zps3126cfc0.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS4_zps3126cfc0.jpg.html)

I wanted to update the front shock absorbers. Here's the kit part:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS6_zpsa86eb470.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS6_zpsa86eb470.jpg.html)

I removed the shock absorbers from the parts and replaced them with ABER shock absorbers and springs made of red coated wire.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS7_zps937668fb.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS7_zps937668fb.jpg.html)

Here's the new part in place. Only half of the shock absorbers will be visible in the finished kit, but i think they look a lot better.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS9_zps82235e0a.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS9_zps82235e0a.jpg.html)

That's it for the moment!! I am very excited about this project!

I will post an update very soon, thanks for watching!

Friends, thank you for your interest and nice words! I really like this car and I hope to do a good replica!

Where do you source the red coated wire for the springs, it looks really nice..??

Steve, it is Tuner Model Manufactory Metallic Coloured soft metal Wire. I used the 0.8 mm wire:

Time for an update! :iceslolan

I painted the chassis/suspension parts. I used a mix of Tamiya's Gold and Champagne Gold to paint the suspension arms:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/PIECES1_zpsf669f4fa.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/PIECES1_zpsf669f4fa.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/PIECES4_zps7d4a5d4d.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/PIECES4_zps7d4a5d4d.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/PIECES3_zpsc33ec40d.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/PIECES3_zpsc33ec40d.jpg.html)

As I waited for the paint to dry, I built the brakes. I really liked Hobby Design's level of detail:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BRAKES_zps93e2b303.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BRAKES_zps93e2b303.jpg.html)

After the paint dried I glued the front shock absorbers in place:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/SUSPENSIONFRONT1_zpscdf89a48.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/SUSPENSIONFRONT1_zpscdf89a48.jpg.html)

I wanted to upgrade the kit steering rods, so I built a new piece from tubing. Here's the original part and the new part in place:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS5_zpsc74d4475.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/CHASSIS5_zpsc74d4475.jpg.html)

I painted the air duct pieces and detailed them with hose clamps. This detail will be barely seen in the finished model, but I like to know the front suspension and brakes are as detailed as I want :p

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/FRONTDUCT_zps13a4c43a.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/FRONTDUCT_zps13a4c43a.jpg.html)

I used Hobby Design's photoetched parts to detail the radiator pieces. This detail will be buried with the body in place, but again, it's just a matter to enjoy the detailing and modeling process:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/RADIATORS1_zps61261a0d.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/RADIATORS1_zps61261a0d.jpg.html)

And here's the front area finished. I added carbon fiber and photoetched grills for extra detail:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/FRONTFINISHED_zps880b3e47.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/FRONTFINISHED_zps880b3e47.jpg.html)

That's it for the moment! Next time, I will show you the rear suspension and engine area detail. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for your interest! Time for an update!

I detailed the rear suspension area with brass/aluminum tubing and photoetched rivets. I also did a little plumbing here:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/REARSUSPENSION1_zps8ed484b0.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/REARSUSPENSION1_zps8ed484b0.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/REARSUSPENSION2_zpsc873244e.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/REARSUSPENSION2_zpsc873244e.jpg.html)

I added Model Factory Hiro's heat Shield foil to the engine area:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/HEATSHIELD1_zps89a57b32.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/HEATSHIELD1_zps89a57b32.jpg.html)

I also added carbon fiber decals for a more realistic look:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINEAREACARBON_zps19025665.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINEAREACARBON_zps19025665.jpg.html)

At this time, I covered the piece Aoshima provides to replicate the fuel fillers and engine area walls with carbon fiber. The back of this piece will be visible in the interior of the car, so I covered that area too:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINEAREACARBON1_zps85e1621e.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINEAREACARBON1_zps85e1621e.jpg.html)

Here's a look of the finished pulleys on the engine. This won't be seen in the finished model, but hey, I had a good time detailing this part. :)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINE4_zpsaa02b375.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINE4_zpsaa02b375.jpg.html)

I covered the valve covers with carbon fiber decals and applied the BMW Motorsport logos:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/VALVECOVERS_zps8d6830c8.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/VALVECOVERS_zps8d6830c8.jpg.html)

I applied photoetched rivets to the valve covers to show a little more detail:

I want to add all the detail I can to the engine, including plumbing and wiring:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINEWIRING_zps12258c81.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/ENGINEWIRING_zps12258c81.jpg.html)

Your builds are always so detailed with bits and also explanations of what you have done.

Thanks for your interest and nice words! I am having a great time with this kit!

Time for an update! I detailed the air filter pieces:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/FILTERBASE_zpsn0ecbfl2.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/FILTERBASE_zpsn0ecbfl2.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/AIRFILTER1_zpsd13c41b4.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/AIRFILTER1_zpsd13c41b4.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/AIRFILTERTESR_zpsqwqejxea.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/AIRFILTERTESR_zpsqwqejxea.jpg.html)

Building the exhausts is a tricky part for this kit. You get the exhausts in 2 parts. You have to glue the first parts to the engine, place the engine in place, glue the rear suspension components and after all that you can glue part 2 of the exhausts in place. This will give you an awful seam between parts 1 and 2 of the exhausts, but I came up with an idea to eliminate this seam and get more detail.

A lot of race cars use exhaust springs to keep the pipes in place and reduce stress in the parts. Here's a photo of the springs in the McLaren F1 GTR (You can see a lot of great reference photos at scaleproduction.com):

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/IMG_7665_zpsbblnkhcp.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/IMG_7665_zpsbblnkhcp.jpg.html)

Here's a photo of what you need to replicate:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUST%20SAMPLE2_zpsruubmusu.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUST%20SAMPLE2_zpsruubmusu.jpg.html)

To replicate a spring set, you only have to add a piece of aluminum tubing to cover the union of the exhaust parts, then, build a couple spring mounts and finally, use Top Studio's Muffler Springs:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUSTS3_zpsyfmzgnkd.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUSTS3_zpsyfmzgnkd.jpg.html)

Before doing this, I sanded the seam marks off the exhaust pieces. The original chroming of the parts was great, but I could not ignore the seam marks:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUSTS%201_zpsiktjgatj.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUSTS%201_zpsiktjgatj.jpg.html)

I painted the exhausts with ALCLAD's Polished Aluminum. Here's the finished result:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUSTS5_zpsldnhzkd9.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/EXHAUSTS5_zpsldnhzkd9.jpg.html)

I will show you the finished exhausts with the springs after the rear suspension assembly, but here's the finished engine:

Then, I placed the engine and all rear suspension parts in place. I started the connection of all the wiring I added:

That's it for the moment! Next time I will show you the finished engine/rear suspension area and I will begin work on the interior!

Thanks for watching!

Really great stuff again Sam -
super idea to hide the joint in the 2 sections of the exhaust pipes.
Also the reason why race machines have exhaust pipes held together with the springs is one for ease of dis-assembly of the engine and suspension when maintenance or crash repair or removal is be done. Also long sections of exhaust that are welded together vibrate and the welds break and then the engine loses power. When I raced superbikes here in the USA in the 90's many times an exhaust would break due to vibration or crash damage and the bike would DNF the race because the exhaust could not be changed quickly - so they started making the pipes in sections and using exhaust springs to hold the sections together.
I'm sure you and many others know that though

Cheers
John

Hi Sam, a great build, as always!!!! I'll follow it closely.

I had some time last weekend to make a little progress, so here it is!

I built Renaissance's throttle frame. It will add great detail to the engine area:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/THROTTLE%20FRAME_zps3tev8z4o.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/THROTTLE%20FRAME_zps3tev8z4o.jpg.html)

Here's the finished piece (you can see I "shaved" the air filter base a little to ensure a better fit after adding a little wiring):

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/THROTTLE%20FINISHED_zpse6qflzvg.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/THROTTLE%20FINISHED_zpse6qflzvg.jpg.html)

The engine area is complete! Some hoses and wires need to be connected. This will be done after the body is glued in place:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINEFINAL1_zps2inmimtc.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/ENGINEFINAL1_zps2inmimtc.jpg.html)

Now, it's time to focus on the interior part of the kit. All electronics are molded in the interior bucket, so I remove those panels to add scratchbuilt pieces:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/INTERIORES%201_zpswo40dhbz.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/INTERIORES%201_zpswo40dhbz.jpg.html)

That's it for the moment! Thanks for watching!

You set the bar for this kit! Great work!

Is the S27 carbon set only for interior of there's more?

Thanks Vric! I'm having a very good time with this project.
The S27 set includes a lot of body/chassis/engine decals! Every part that should appear in carbon fiber is considered in the set.

At last, I had some time to do some work in my favorite part of scale modeling...building and detailing the interior of the car!

First, I covered the interior with Studio 27 carbon fiber decals and added a couple coats of Tamiya's semigloss clear:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/1%20INTERIOR%20CARBON_zpssx1fjjda.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/1%20INTERIOR%20CARBON_zpssx1fjjda.jpg.html)

I detailed and wired the fire extinguisher:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/2%20FIRE_zpsgkavft2s.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/2%20FIRE_zpsgkavft2s.jpg.html)

Here's the fire extinguisher in place. I started wiring the interior at this point, using Top Studio, MFH and RB Motion connectors and wires:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/3%20INTERIOR_zps1htpv415.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/3%20INTERIOR_zps1htpv415.jpg.html)

Aoshima molded all electronics in the interior, so I removed those panels and scratchbuilt all electronic parts:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/4%20INTERIOR_zpscssbm9y6.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/4%20INTERIOR_zpscssbm9y6.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/11%20INTERIOR_zpsyebbijwz.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/11%20INTERIOR_zpsyebbijwz.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/17%20INTERIOR_zpsasqkb56f.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/17%20INTERIOR_zpsasqkb56f.jpg.html)

I added aluminum rivets to the interior:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/5%20INTERIOR_zpsefdwdjqq.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/5%20INTERIOR_zpsefdwdjqq.jpg.html)

I added photoetched vents and aluminum switches to the dashboard. I used Hasegawa's Polarization finish film (Brown) to replicate the digital screen:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/6%20INTERIOR_zps6pnygxb4.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/6%20INTERIOR_zps6pnygxb4.jpg.html)

I detailed the steering column and wheel with paint and carbon fiber. I added wiring to the steering wheel at this time:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/12%20INTERIOR_zpskoqpizsz.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/12%20INTERIOR_zpskoqpizsz.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/7%20INTERIOR_zpsoualqyt7.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/7%20INTERIOR_zpsoualqyt7.jpg.html)

I really liked the seat in Aoshima's model. I added carbon fiber to the back and photoetched seatbelt hardware from the Hobby Design detail set. The seatbelt fabric came from Tuner Model Manufactory:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/8%20INTERIOR_zpsnsxe0n60.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/8%20INTERIOR_zpsnsxe0n60.jpg.html)

I detailed the interior switches panel and prepared all the wiring to "connect" it:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/10%20INTERIOR_zpsvcqstxlg.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/10%20INTERIOR_zpsvcqstxlg.jpg.html)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/9%20INTERIOR_zpsmfjki2wh.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/9%20INTERIOR_zpsmfjki2wh.jpg.html)

Hobby Design's gear shift lever is a thing of beauty. It takes some time and patience to assemble all the tiny parts to complete it, but the final result is great:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/13%20INTERIOR_zpstfni0yf9.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/13%20INTERIOR_zpstfni0yf9.jpg.html)

While the glue dried in the gear shift lever, I added padding to the roll cage:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/14%20INTERIOR_zps7xku3jqf.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/14%20INTERIOR_zps7xku3jqf.jpg.html)

Aoshima did a good job on the pedals, but I used Hobby Design parts to build new ones:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/15%20INTERIOR_zpsf4dj25ep.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/15%20INTERIOR_zpsf4dj25ep.jpg.html)

The new pedals add a lot of detail to the interior. I scratchbuilt the gas pedal linkage:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/16%20INTERIOR_zpslko1v5z3.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/16%20INTERIOR_zpslko1v5z3.jpg.html)

That's it for the moment! Next time I will show you the finished interior.

Thanks for watching!

Awsome work!

I know this might be a hard question to answer because it varies but what's the common size of you wire that you use for all your electrical connections? Every time I try I seem to get the wrong gauge and they turn out looking 'chunky' or way too thin.

This is in fact a hard question to answer...For 1:24 electrical connections the most common size of wire I use is 0.45 mm (0.02"). Of course, each connection is different, and I end up using 5 or 6 different sizes in a single model.
To obtain the best result possible, I get my hands on any piece of wire I see...I keep a "catalog" with a sample of every kind of wire I have to choose the right size for each connection.

Fantastic and inspirational.

I love all the ties holding the cables together behind the seat. How do you achieve that? Wire wrapped around and then glued? That would be a three handed job!? Do you use tweezers? Is the model secured whilst you work on those parts? So many questions!

Thanks for your interest friends!

I love all the ties holding the cables together behind the seat. How do you achieve that? Wire wrapped around and then glued? That would be a three handed job!? Do you use tweezers? Is the model secured whilst you work on those parts? So many questions!

Beakster, I use .0075 Detail Master wire to tie the cables. I make a knot over them and then add a tiny drop of CA glue over it. To keep the knot tight I use a couple of surgical forceps, so I can use my hands to apply the glue.

Now, time to prepare the body!

Aoshima did a great job with the McLaren body. I only had to sand off a couple injection marks.
I opened holes to add aluminum rivets and air jack connectors:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYWORK2_zps02jeuo8x.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYWORK2_zps02jeuo8x.jpg.html)

The FIA GT car had different rear wing end plates than the Lemans cars, so I had to sctratchbuild them with styrene:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYWORK3_zpsosjpeqdz.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYWORK3_zpsosjpeqdz.jpg.html)

I applied ZERO PAINTS Gulf blue and pearl tinter to the body parts:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYPAINT1_zpsnv3mrh3j.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYPAINT1_zpsnv3mrh3j.jpg.html)

Then, I took copies of the decals to mark the separation lines between colours:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DECALS1_zpsc4uueelk.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DECALS1_zpsc4uueelk.jpg.html)

After the blue/pearl paints dried, I masked the body to apply the black paint. This is a tricky scheme to mask. I used bare metal foil to get a sharp line, and applied liquid masking tape to "seal" any hole or tear in the foil:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYPAINT3_zpsr5vv9zgi.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYPAINT3_zpsr5vv9zgi.jpg.html)

I am ready to spray the black paint! I will show you the result next time!

Thanks for your nice words! This project is almost done!

I applied the black paint and decided to paint the orange areas instead of using the decals included in Studio 27īs sheet. This is a photo of all the parts painted, cleared (ZERO paints 2K clear) and polished:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYPAINTED1_zpsiezso6yd.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/BODYPAINTED1_zpsiezso6yd.jpg.html)

I also painted the rims. For a "printed" look on the tire markings, I applied the decals using MicroSol and then sprayed some Tamiya flat clear:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/WHEELS1_zpsvhlizcwt.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/WHEELS1_zpsvhlizcwt.jpg.html)

I placed the brake units inside the rims and painted the lock nuts rings red and blue. This colours were used to identify right and left wheels on the real car:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/REDRIM_zpsno4myjco.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/REDRIM_zpsno4myjco.jpg.html)

Now, time to place the decals in the body! First, I applied carbon fiber decals on the cockpit/door areas, since I will display the model with opened doors:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DECALS1_zpsiegqkj6t.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DECALS1_zpsiegqkj6t.jpg.html)

Studio 27 decals are a little thick, but they can be easily applied using MicroSet/Sol:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DECALS3_zpsfovfnwdd.jpg (http://s6.photobucket.com/user/sam01contact/media/MCLAREN%20F1%20GTR/DECALS3_zpsfovfnwdd.jpg.html)

Next time, I will show you the body with all the decals applied. This one is almost done!

Thanks for watching!

I have been watching this build with great interest. Its always a treat whenever I see this thread bumped to the top with new content! The scratch detailing and clean work really enhance Aoshima's excellent kit. My only disappointment is that you're almost done and there won't be any more updates to look forward to! Again, beautiful work. I'll be keeping an eye out for a new thread in the "Completed Projects" section.

Also, did I read somewhere that there is a Model Factory Hiro F1 GTR in your stash?

Hi. Tremendous operation. I too build such model. Causes in me that color of a body is lower than blue color is black.
It seems to me, it has a brown shade and in case of bright light it clearly is visible.
For example here: http://www.flatout.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/f1-gtr-101.jpg
What thoughts in this respect are?
I would like to pick up in the operation the necessary color.

The colour on the lower sides is actually a very deep chocolate brown that reflects a bronze metallic/pearl at certain angles
(not a very technical answer I know - but I have seen the car close-up on several occasions - don't know the paint code)

Friends, thank you for your interest and nice words.

Also, did I read somewhere that there is a Model Factory Hiro F1 GTR in your stash?

Yes, I have a MFH F1 GTR short tail (Gulf Livery), but I am thinking about selling it :icon16:

Thatīs the right answer. The only way to do the paint scheme 100% right would be to paint the brown/pearl section and paint the red markings.

From what I've read the colour is matched to their cigarette packs, which back in the 90s was that very dark bronze colour.
The car looks almost black in anything other than direct sunlight.
I've got the Aoshima Gulf LeMans version which has the fluro orange lines (that separate the blue & "black" printed with black so you don't have to be perfect with your alignment. Rather disappointed, might need to paint the orange lines instead...

Remember seeing a thread awhile ago that was a massive debate about the colours of this car, cant remember if it was here tho.

Anyway - Sam, looks amazing!!!!

When there is a continuation? I can't wait to look.
Pochemema you decided not to paste before painting a small spoiler on back part?
There is a strong wish that your photos were larger. For example 800x600.
Such amazing operation, and it is very difficult to consider in small photos.

I painted that spoiler separated from the body, pasted it and then applied the clear coat.

I donīt have larger photos of the images Iīve already posted, but I will try to post larger ones for the next steps.
