Rear Gate Problem

The lock on the rear gate of my 2003 Jeep Liberty will not open. All the other doors lock and unlock. I have pulled the panel and have gained access to the linkage, but it still wont open. Please advise.

I found a small latch by a white plastic piece that will release the gate. I found it by accident, while feeling around the mechanism. I can't see the latch, but I can feel it. Still, I can't figure the problem of locking up. If I unlatch the gate and use the key fob to lock it, it works once. Then, after that, it won't release. Oh well, another mystery.
