Installing Torque Converter to Driveplate

When matting a torque converter to the driveplate/flex plate, after bolting up the engine and transmission, there is a slight gap between the TQ and flexplate. Should the torque converter pull forward closer to the flexplate when bolting it, or should the flexplate bend to fill the extra space?

Just found a YouTube video that mentioned the torque converter should slide towards the flexplate. Something must be causing my TQ to bind up, because it is not sliding.

What vehicle is this and what has been done?

2006 Mazda 3, engine rebuild

there is often a nub sticing out on the center of the convertor that has to fit into the hole on the rear of the crankshaft. take any of the flexplate to convertor bolts out you may have put in and try lifting up a little as you try and move it toward the engine. also if you changed the crank or had it reworked make sure it doesn't have a pilot bearing in it

Turned out it was binding on that centre nubby thing. There was excess paint on it that was preventing it from going all the way into the drive plate. I cleaned it off and put it a little bit of lube on.
