911 Turbo '88 [Singer Style]

Starting a new project after 1,5 years and I'm very excited! In the meantime I managed to fall deeply in love with Porsches... While browsing I learned about the Singer company. They "restore" (the word is not enough to describe their work and passion) air cooled Porsches, producing stunning results with respect to the brand's ideals, style and driving pleasure.
At their homepage you will find more info and photos:
http://singervehicledesign.com/

So I want to give many stylistic aspects of Singer to my 911 Turbo and accentuate a more classic/retro look.

The pics show the major changes to be done primarily.

The front bumper will look like this but the black line between the bumper and the hood, as well as the bumper protectors will be left intact as tribute to the 930 style of the 80s:

For starters, the wing was cut and the the bumper details were erased.

Abrasive paper work started and so far it looks more retro and sexy to my eyes without the wing:

During the next days I will work with epoxy putty in order to fill the holes and start shaping the bumpers. That's all for the moment!

@ brysonwong Me too, I hope it turns out as I have visualised it...

I worked mainly on the rear bumper and with 2 part epoxy putty I filled the holes and exhaust gaps. I also used putty to reduce the rear hood opening. Lots of sanding and shaping awaits me...
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b580/SakisPolitis/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/IMG_2190_zps3742e008.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/SakisPolitis/media/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/IMG_2190_zps3742e008.jpg.html)

Putty was used to eliminate the engraved line from the side bumpers. My aim is to make it look like a one piece side skirt that will be painted same as the body colour with no black line.
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b580/SakisPolitis/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/IMG_2204_zpsf10f0c71.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/SakisPolitis/media/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/IMG_2204_zpsf10f0c71.jpg.html)

The fuel cap is also deleted and instead I drilled a hole on the hood from where the new cap will emerge. I was satisfied with the result when I realised that it was 1-2mm offset to the left... So putty again and in line for sanding and drilling. :banghead::banghead:

I left the putty to dry overnight and the started sanding. I also changed plans and will eliminate the black bumper protectors. I tried the right side and I like the result. After the first priming session I will have a clearer picture of the final shape and possible flaws to be corrected.

Nice start, I like those Singer mods a lot! I think you shoul also apply those 2k putty on the fenders cause as I can see on the process photos by Singer, they apply tons of putty to smooth the shape of the fenders.

Thanks for the comments. They keep me going as I began the project with minor modifications in mind and it turns to be a custom body kit. Small update to keep the thread going.

@Scrible There is no need to use putty to the fenders as the body of the Turbo is already wide to begin with. If I add more it will become a RWB... :icon16:

The 2K epoxy putty never got hard. Maybe I didn't mix it well. So I used plastic card and then filled with cyanoacrylate. But this way it couldn't harden properly as there was too much quantity. I removed it and used a toothpick to add layers of glue, each time one got hard I added another until I "reached the surface". Then I measured carefully this time and hit the hole dead center.

Apart from that, I mainly focused on the front bumper and leveled the epoxy putty with the rest of the surface. I didn't shape the openings yet (well I tried the left a little). In some places the putty was like rubber as it wasn't backed properly. This was taken care of with some super glue. Now I'm ready to give the final shapes.
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b580/SakisPolitis/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/IMG_2249_zpsd99f0641.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/SakisPolitis/media/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/IMG_2249_zpsd99f0641.jpg.html)

I also sanded the side skirts and the fuel cap.

When I'm done I will move to some more changes to the body. As you see in the following photo, Singer is more round overall (different model I know) and the fenders "close" towards the center as they go down leaving a big part of the tyre exposed to the sight.
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b580/SakisPolitis/19180-singer-911-wallpaper-2560x1600_zpsb41a1563.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/SakisPolitis/media/19180-singer-911-wallpaper-2560x1600_zpsb41a1563.jpg.html)
IMAGE IS FOR DISCUSSION PURPOSES ONLY

In the Turbo it's almost 90 degrees vertical. (This means more sandpaper work... )
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b580/SakisPolitis/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/Untitled1_zpsdbf228d5.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/SakisPolitis/media/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/Untitled1_zpsdbf228d5.jpg.html)

My purpose is to achieve a more homogenous and rounded result when seen from above.
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b580/SakisPolitis/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/Untitled_zpse7ec0f85.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/SakisPolitis/media/911%20Turbo%20-%20Singer%20Style/Untitled_zpse7ec0f85.jpg.html)

So, still lots of work to be done but I enjoy it.

And thanks for watching!

Small update. I cut the low part of the fenders and putty was placed. I started shaping one side and so far I'm satisfied as the mods look (to my eyes) well integrated to the whole body.

And I thought I would avoid the temptation... :shakehead Great looking wheels but I think I will stick with the factory ones for this model. Thanks for the heads up!

To the model: I noticed that the wheel arches are wider than normal and form an elliptical shape. It is corrected with putty but it adds more time. I hope I will be able to put primer by the end of this week.

Modifications never end, in fact they become more demanding. I worked on the rest of the wheel arches and mainly on the front bumper. The black "filet" in front of the hood was deleted and the bumper was leveled. Sanding and working on the area that connects the front bumper and the rest of the body is the trickiest one. Plus the fact that I have to re-engrave the panel line. I primed the car once because it was difficult to work on a surface with multiple colors of putties and cyanoacrylate as well as reveal the flaws (which are many).

The "menu" consists of creating the panel lines for the front bumper, correct the many flaws, reshape a little the wheel arches as well as the engine cover. I also don't like the panel lines in this area, they seem too wide and not straight. I'm thinking of resetting them. By no means the kit is ready for paint as it needs many corrections. Nevertheless, there is a first shape!

That's all for now.
Thanks for watching!

It's the most appropriate kit if you want to depict an actual Singer Porsche. In my case I wanted the challenge of trying to implement as much style approaches and philosophy of the company in another Porsche model. I would like to try an actual depiction in the future as well as see your WIP when the time comes, (i'd love to).

Now that I take a closer look at the photos I'm thinking of separating the front bumper completely to work more freely on the car's lines. This way I will be able to align both the chassis and the bumper perfectly and achieve crisper edges even if it adds more time. I prefer this better than working in the closed curves, trying to scribe lines that will be "approximately". Tomorrow I hope I will have an update!

Deep breath and... rock 'n roll. The bumper was cut and corrections are made. From the first dry fits I can already see a better fit and crisper lines. Still in progress.

I am so excited about this. I wanted to build one myself, but didn't know how to go about it. I will be saving this WIP. Please keep it coming...

BTW, which epoxie are you using? Any idea on the color yet? I'm tempted to highjack your WIP by building along with you haha

Thanks a lot! You are most welcome to join for a simultaneous build if you like! :)

I use the two part epoxy putty by Tamiya. Very fine stuff that sticks firmly and is sanded like a charm.
The color combo I'm thinking of is this:

Thanks everyone.

After working on the front bumper separately I finally re-attached it to the body and I'm happy I made this decision as the overall look is more precise. It was intentionally glued slightly towards the passenger cabin for a more classic look and this means I will work again on the fenders to match its new position.

Another small update.

The engine cover lines were re-scribed and I worked on the wheel arches to eliminate the big side surface (compared to the real one). In order to do that I lowered the ride height, sanded the arches even more and then, with a hobby knife, I aligned the upper lines to match the new shape of the arches. It is still in progress.

Last mods consisted of engraving the panel line around the windshield for more realism and facilitate the painting procedure. Initially the (to become) chrome stripe was barely higher than the panel level. Better work for 2 hours and paint for 5 minutes than work for 5 minutes and paint for 2 hours. :smokin:

Thanks a lot for your time and comments!

First round of paint is complete. I decided to make my own mix instead of buying an existing Ivory colour. I used Gunze Gloss White (about 6ml) and two drops of Tamiya's Flat Earth. I will leave the paint to gas out, sand any imperfections or dust particles and I will go for another round as I want a smoother finish before the 2K. I hope the weather will allow it as the next days will be rainy and with high humidity.

Shots are on the fly.

Clever idea for doing the wheel lips. Amazing work keep it up!

Love what you have done so far. I brush painted the recesses in these Fuchs. I thinned Tamiya semi-gloss black; (5) drops of thinner to (1) drop of paint. I loaded up a small brush and touched it at the intersection of the spoke and the wheel and let capillary action pull the paint along the spoke and into the recesses. It took (3) coats to get the coverage I wanted but I think they came out nice. It should work for you as well.

Not at all! Thanks a lot for the advice. I was thinking of doing the rims the same way you proposed.
Sadly it didn't turn out very well, the line between the "star" and the "bottom" is curvy and the the capillary action didn't help. I thought of scribing a line but that is not accurate at all, anyway I'm working on it! For now I have to strip and repaint them.
In the meantime I'm working on the engine cover and when done I will paint everything and 2K clear them.

I hope I will have progress soon.

Wonderful project idea, and I like that you trimmed the fender lips down, much better ...my only observation would be that the wheels/tires stick out past the fender lips, and I would probably pull them back slightly, otherwise no criticism at all, great workmanship & looking forward to seeing more! :)

Some plaid inserts to the seats would great too?! :)

Been away for some time for many reasons but I'm back. I wasn't happy with the colour texture and I don't know what caused it for sure. So reset and start over.

It was for good though as I corrected quite a few things like filling the side skirt emergency lights and creating new pillars for the window trim from metal rods. Resetting had it's cost on them but now they are strong. I also started the engine cover from plastic sheet.

I wanted to avoid the Alclad primer as I thought it was responsible for the uneven surface the first time so I used Tamiya's XF-56. Then white. In between I sanded the surface smooth as I had the same effect again.
http://s18.postimg.org/6vperdsw9/IMG_3444_1.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Which was at its worst when I sprayed the colour (change of plans by the way). It is Tamiya Bright Green decanted and airbrushed. I suspect it has to do with the dilution. The coat to follow will be a bit darker and more diluted (I will give my airbrush a thorough clean to be on the safe side). It is really frustrating as I have to sand the whole car.

After sanding it starts to look a bit better.
http://s18.postimg.org/6vyliv7nt/IMG_3478.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

I also changed the shape of the air intakes to a rounder one. Seems better to my eyes.

While I was taking a break from all the sanding procedure I polished a fender just for fun. If the whole car turns out this way I will be satisfied but first we have another round of painting and 2K to be applied.

that's dried paint in your paint job. More thinner and less air for starters, your spraying too dry.

Happy mother's day to all of you!

As proposed by Ferrari TR it was the thinning procedure and the pressure I used that caused the textured effect.

I started the mixing procedure to tone it down a bit. I thinned it more and used less pressure with no issues this time.
http://s27.postimg.org/clgcnl1tf/IMG_3495.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

First mix was too dark and dull. It's not very visible in the photos.

http://s27.postimg.org/or5jxzgj7/IMG_3498.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

So I brightened the second mixture and finally I got the colour I wanted. Bright but not fluorescent.

http://s27.postimg.org/hhokt0rcj/IMG_3512.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

I will leave the paint to dry overnight and then I will proceed with some sanding and compound to eliminate the orange peel before varnishing.
Thanks for your time!

Were you mixing tamiya acrylics into a TS Lacquer? Isn't that disastrous?
