87 maxima help

I have an 87 maxima v6 3.0 that idles rough and dies when I try to give it gas. sometimes it will die out and sometime it won't. Is there a way to pull the codes from it without a code reader? I don't have access to one and need to get this car figured out. There is an ECC under the seat but it doesn't have the dial or the LED's to check it that way. Where is the idle air control valve? Its a manual transmission and the most recent work done that is unrelated to the current problems were the recalled injectors. Otherwise the dealership wants hundreds of dollars to replace all the sensors! I would prefer to check them myself and replace only the ones that need replacing. Thanks for any help you can give!
