Just been quoted $500 to replace door latches?

I just replaced the outside door handles but now the outside handle doesn't seem to lift up the internal mechanism high enough to pop the door open. It opens about once in 20 tries. I took it to a body shop they say the latch needs to be replaced. It seemed to me to be a very perfunctory evaluation, they just want a cookie cutter solution doesn't matter if it costs 10x what it should.
The external handle lifts an internal rod up that pops it open. Any tips or guidance?
