I wanted to know how a V8 in the '03 corvette can get 28 mpg and the 350Z only gets 36 mpg on the highway and which would be a better car foreveryday driving.

This should probably be in the car vs. car forum but, the Vette has a very low coefficient of drag and a 6th gear that puts it extremely low in the rpm's at freeway speeds. With the amount of torque that car has it doesn't need to rev to go fast. The Z on the other hand needs revs to go anywhere fast and is probably more than a thousand rpm higher at 60mph. I don't know what the Cd on the Z is so I can't use that for comparison.

whaddya mean "only" 36? 28 to 36 in mpg is quite a jump in the first place, and 36 mpg for a 3.5 liter V6 is pretty good. And so the Z is a more efficient car to drive if you're concerned aobut teh gas.

Nevermind, I read that way too fast. 36mph is outstanding for any car, let alone a friggin sports car. The Vette does get somewhere in the low 20's for city mileage I believe.

36 MPG highway? think you meant to type 26. Also, it's because of the way the cars are engineered, Fbodies even being heavier would get low 30s on the highway if you wanted, it's ont of the best motors ever made for a reason.

it's all got to do with the gearing of that 6th gear...
in a vette, it's an over drive, and the reason you can get 28 mpg on the freeway in a vette/viper/firebird/camaro...
super lower cruising rpms at 60.
hell, a viper at 60 in 6th is doing about 1800rpm.
that's crawling for me...
so do the math...
low rpm, low fuel usage, still tons of power, geared right, great mileage...
there ya go

The EPA Highway MPG ratings are done at 55 MPH on a dyno in top gear. In the C5, that translates to 1450 RPM. There is no torque or power that low in the rev range, but these are not considered when the tests are done.
